The thinner tree was cut years ago and the big one has been holding and feeding it since then. They "wake up" together in the spring and "go to sleep" together in the autumn.

The “Cypress of Abarkuh” is estimated to be between 4,000 - 5,000 years old. 25 meters tall, 11.5 meters diameter. Perhaps the 2nd oldest tree living.

We had such a great event today, planting trees at Elmhurst School. Sixteen trees including Marina Strawberries, Australian Willow, beautiful Magnolias, and native Redbuds now provide shade for the schoolyard. The teachers and children came and created the energy and enthusiasm that made it so much fun. We couldn't have done it without the help of the VUSD staff including Principal Deanna Baczek and Amy Mukapayday and the VUSD Maintenance team led by Sergio Cahuantzi. These are some of the fun signs the children created. (The kids also named the trees!)

I want to share some really good news. The Ventura Tree Alliance received notification that we were awarded a grant to plant trees at Elmhurst School from RELEAF and Southern California Edison.

Elmhurst is a Title One school and has very few trees in the schoolyard. (see image)

Unfortunately the public is not invited to this event, but we are also planning an event in April at Montalvo Hill Park on April 25. Check back for more information on the Montalvo Hill event.

There are a number of myths about Eucalyptus trees. Here's why they are important in the San Francisco Bay Area:

Cloud forests, such as the eucalyptus trees shrouded in fog on Mount Sutro in San Francisco, condense large amounts of moisture out of the clouds that then falls onto the ground. Fog drip in [San Francisco’s eucalyptus forests adds sixteen inches of rainfall ](https://milliontrees.me/2014/06/12/ants-used-to-scapegoat-our-urban-forest/)each year in those forests.

That transpiration is important in Ventura as well. We're not a cloud forest, but we need the moisture that these giant trees provide to keep Ventura cool.

Thanks especially to the City of Ventura's Urban Forestry team - Stacey Zarazua, Andy Torres, Mike Melore and the rest of the staff. We couldn't do it without you!

Looking for Volunteers to Plant Trees for Arbor Day!
Roll up your sleeves, grab your hat and a shovel and join the Ventura Tree Alliance to make a difference in Ventura. Mark your calendars for a family-friendly tree planting on Arbor Day, Saturday, March 12, from 9 to noon.
In preparation for the event, West Coast Arborists, the Ventura Tree Alliance, and the City of Ventura will co-host a community workshop on February 26, from 8 to 11am, at the EP Foster Library Topping Room, 651 E. Main Street. The workshop provides information to volunteers and the opportunity to learn what trees will be planted and how to plant them for long-term success. Also included will be a botanist-guided walk in the Botanical Garden.

On Arbor Day, volunteers will meet at the Westpark Community Center parking lot, 450 W Harrison Ave, Ventura. Wear sunscreen and hats, bring gloves, water and your own shovel and enjoy a beautiful day outdoors. The 65 trees to be planted along the Ventura bike path adjacent to Westpark include those that are common and local and, in the spirit of conservation, those that are unique. The funds for this event were part of the Amplify grant, awarded by Cal Fire through the California Urban Forest Council to West Coast Arborists. West Coast Arborists is partnering with the City of Ventura and the Ventura Tree Alliance for the event. The goal of the Amplify movement is to improve and diversify urban forests in disadvantaged and low-income communities throughout California by planting 2,000 statewide in one day, Arbor Day 2022.

Tree of Life, Washington

Olympic National Park’s Tree of Life seems to defy all logic. The grand Sitka spruce sits almost in midair with all of its roots exposed and hanging below.

Perched between two steep slopes, the tree holds on by only a few of its roots while the rest hang below, inexplicably staying standing and gaining enough nutrients to not only survive but to fully thrive.

Please join the Ventura Tree Alliance on August 24 at 5:00 as we meet to learn about the city's recycled water program. We will be joined by a special guest, Jason Wong, from the City of Ventura's water department. He will provide information about the city's water recycling (mobile reuse) program and answer questions. In order to access the city's recycled water, you need to attend a training session, fill out an application and pay a $75 permit fee. This meeting will count for the training session and Jason will bring applications. The filling station is off Spinnaker Dr, and unlimited water is available.

We need Ventura residents to take advantage of this program to help water our drought-stressed trees.

Jim Ackerman (in photo) will be at the meeting with his water truck and he'll be available to explain his tank set-up.

Please PM us and we will contact you with the address of the meeting.

Good news.

On Monday night’s City Council consent calendar there is an item to reject all bids for the Mission Park project, so there can be more public input and changes made to address the concerns raised.
https://www.cityofventura.ca.gov/DocumentCenter/View/28451/9J

Public input was cited as the reason for the change. Good job everyone! (Thanks Carol Spector for the original post.)
