The transition to electric vehicles poses a significant challenge for many gas station owners, especially small independent operators. According to the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS), about 75% of gas stations in the U.S. are owned by independent small businesses rather than major oil companies.

These small business owners often operate on thinner margins and have limited capital flexibility compared to big corporations. Investing in new EV charging infrastructure can be daunting. They also rely more heavily on fuel sales for profitability compared to convenience store sales.

Yet adapting to the EV future is necessary for long-term viability. Some suggestions that can help small gas station businesses manage the transition:

- Take advantage of government tax credits and incentive programs to offset costs of installing EV chargers.
- Partner with charging networks or other stations on shared infrastructure costs.
- Start with lower cost Level 2 chargers before investing in fast chargers.
- Explore creative sources of additional revenue like solar panels, car washes, and parcel delivery.
- Engage with utility companies on smart charging programs that optimize electricity demand.

With wise preparation and partnerships, small business-owned gas stations can adapt to the coming decline in gas demand while retaining their essential community roles. Proactive planning that accounts for limited resources will be key. The EV transition brings uncertainty, but also opportunities for gas stations that leverage their strengths.

The United States is known for its car culture, conveniently fueled by an expansive network of gas stations. According to Market Realist, the US averages approximately 1 gas station for every 2,100 people. This level of gas station density far surpasses most other nations.

For example, Canada has around 1 gas station per 3,000 people, while Australia has roughly 1 per 4,500 people. The density is even lower in China, with only 1 gas station for every 47,500 people. And in India, the ratio stands at 1 station per 55,000 people or more.

Differing levels of vehicle ownership and urban density are key factors behind the variance. The US vehicle ownership rate is over 800 per 1,000 people compared to 280 per 1,000 in China. American suburbs and wide roads also enabled more scattered station development.

However, the US gas station density may start to decline as electric vehicles gain share and require less fueling. By contrast, countries beginning to motorize like India will need stations to grow to meet demand. The transition to EVs and location technology will determine optimal future gas station distribution worldwide.

But for now, those in the US can still appreciate the unparalleled convenience of never being more than a quick drive away from a fill up. Whether cruising the open highways in the West or navigating dense Eastern cities, fuel is always near at hand thanks to the country's unrivaled gas station access.

08/02/2023

For gas stations today, convenience stores and another services are increasingly important revenue drivers, while fuel sales make up a shrinking fraction of profits.

According to recent data from the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS), in 2021, around 82% of total gas station industry revenues came from convenience and foodservice sales. Just 18% was from fuel sales. This flips the ratio from a few decades ago when gas was the primary profit center.

This major shift is being driven by the rise of electric vehicles, increasing mileage efficiency of gas vehicles, and changing consumer preferences. As drivers need to fill up less often, gas stations must rely more on their stores to make money.
Many gas stations are now pursuing strategies to maximize convenience store revenues, such as expanding foodservice options, investing in upscale interior designs, partnering with popular fast food brands, and implementing loyalty programs. Modernizing stores to create engaging customer experiences is now pivotal.

Gas stations also generate income from alternative profit centers like car washes, EV charging stations, and auto repair services. Diversifying business lines beyond fuel pumps is necessary today.

The data is clear - for gas stations to thrive into the future, focusing on their retail operations is now the #1 priority. As the market share of electric cars grows, successful gas stations will be ones with attractive, busy stores that give customers compelling reasons to stop. Fuel may bring people in, but convenience keeps them coming back.

07/31/2023

The electric vehicle revolution is well underway, and charging infrastructure is expanding to meet demand. According to the Department of Energy, there are now around 130,000 public EV charging ports available at over 50,000 stations across the United States.

With approximately 150,000 gas stations nationwide, this indicates about 33% of gas stations currently host EV charging.

One-third of stations having charging capability represents major progress. Just a few years ago, EV charging was only available at a small fraction of gas stations. Now EV drivers can access charging at 1 in 3 stations they stop at. This accessibility makes long distance electric travel more feasible.

Gas stations recognize that investing in chargers now is crucial to adapt to the EV transition. With virtually all major automakers pledging to electrify their offerings in the coming decade, pure internal combustion engine vehicles will become scarce. Gas stations that don't install chargers risk losing relevance.

The symbiotic relationship between gas stations and EV charging makes sense. Stations provide strategic locations that allow drivers to charge conveniently during a long trip. And charging drivers tend to spend more on convenience store purchases. Installing chargers also enables gas stations to tap into a growing revenue stream.

There is still progress to be made, but the fact that over 50,000 stations now enable EV charging shows the transition is accelerating. Gas stations that proactively install chargers will maintain their competitiveness. They are wisely future-proofing their businesses as electrification reshapes mobility.
