Canopy wishes to thank arborist Jennifer Tso, food policy specialist Peter Ruddock, permaculturist Kris Jensen, and nutritionist Lisa Herndon for guiding a fun, educational walk through the Edible Urban Forest of Palo Alto. Walking from Johnson Park to Gamble Garden, we learned about edible trees like the black walnut, urban foraging policy, yummy plant-based recipes, and tree care. If you weren’t able to join this tree walk, you can join our next walk at the @juniormuseumzoo (registration link in bio) and stay tuned for more dates!

Watering your trees properly is so important! When trees are stressed, they cannot perform their functions properly, which can lead to their failure in our urban environment. Making sure we water both mature and young trees appropriately will ensure they can better root themselves in the ground and survive storms. Follow Canopy’s Tree Watering Guidelines at the link in our bio to see if you are adequately watering the trees on your property. #treecare #arborist #urbantrees #arblife #bayarea #treesofinstagram #treestagram #treelovers

A clip from “Humans of East Palo”, a 2023 short film by Canopy’s Teen Urban Foresters, highlighting the importance of the 2007 EPA soundwall project developed under the tenure of then-mayor Pat Foster. Watch the full video on YouTube (link in bio) 🌳 The Soundwall in East Palo Alto was a project that aimed to close the disparity of trees and access to nature because of the green gap. The green gap is when predominantly white neighborhoods will have access to more trees and more resources, compared to neighborhoods of color such as EPA. Having access to nature has given many healthy benefits such as preventing cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure or even helping with mental health, producing endorphins, and noise cancellation. In order to create more access to trees in EPA, the sound wall was created in 2007. The soundwall is on both sides of the 101 where trees are planted in order to close the disparity of trees between Palo Alto and underrepresented East Palo Alto. #blackhistorymonth

Applying mulch can help your trees weather the rain this winter. Apply mulch to the base of your tree to protect the roots from being crushed and help the tree have a stronger root attachment to the ground. Additional benefits of mulch include temperature regulation, weed suppression, fertilizer, and water conservation. Apply 2” thick from just next to the trunk out to the dripline in an even layer, anytime during the year, to provide these benefits for your tree of any age.

Thank You to Our Volunteers! (Canopy 2023)
Over the past year alone, more than 750 volunteers shared close to 3,000 hours with Canopy as planting leaders and volunteers, pruning and tree care helpers, tree walk leaders and experts, tree surveyors, assistant educators, outreach and advocacy volunteers, generous donors, board and committee members, and more. Volunteers are, without a doubt, the core of Canopy’s success and impact. Thank you!

My culture, by Paco Arreola, Teen Urban Forester: We have the gift of youth and for that we should dance and play For the sun is only limited so we must enjoy till the end of the day Lets struck the drums and put our hands in the air Lets treat this day as if its our last strand of hair Our food and drinks we enjoy to share The bright color dresses and the color of our skin Makes us who we are, we were not born sins The bright warm aura that we give around Is like the shapes in our clothes that we bring in town Our flag is what shows cultural peace Red stripes shows spaniards fighting for independence is what we got The prosperity of mexicanos and purity of thoughts We care for nothing but joy and tranquility is all we want We have the gift of youth and for that we should dance and play For the sun is only limited so we must enjoy till the end of the day #LatinxHeritageMonth ..

Thanks to you, our friends and supporters, 2021 was a remarkable year for Canopy — and for the trees! We're excited to grow this great work together in 2022. Our plans for the new year include expanding our cohort of Teen Urban Foresters, investing in more multilingual programs and materials, continuing to advocate for strong local tree ordinances, planting trees where they’re needed the most, and so much more. Will you make a year-end gift today to support this work in 2022? → canopy.org/donate
