This morning Canopy staff, planting leaders, and volunteers from Google planted 50 plants at the LifeMoves Mountain View interim housing site to foster a healthier, greener community for clients. The planting included a mix of potted citrus trees, herbs, shade trees, and smaller landscaping plants. Canopy and LifeMoves hope this addition of green space will support the well-being and resilience of clients by helping to reduce extreme heat, mitigate air pollution, provide edible plants, and enhance the sense of community. Thank you to our volunteers and County of Santa Clara Public Health Department for supporting this greening and resilience project.

Canopy and Alta Vista High School (AVHS) students planted nine trees at the alternative school’s campus on May 16 as part of a community-led effort to create a serenity garden. With help from Canopy staff, planting leaders, and Mentor Tutor Connection, 30 students planted one valley oak, two silver lindens, and six pacific wax myrtles as part of a greater effort that will eventually include a fountain, benches, paths and swings. Planted during Mental Health Awareness Month, the AVHS staff hope the space will help foster an outdoor escape that supports student wellbeing and connection. Thank you to Los Altos Mountain View Community Foundation for supporting this project!

🌳Happy National Arbor Day🌳 Today, we celebrate Arbor Day by congratulating East Palo Alto on this incredible journey to becoming a Tree City USA, one of the goals of EPA's 2022 Urban Forest Master Plan. This could not happen without a coalition of people who care about the health and wellbeing of trees and communities. As Mayor López shared in his proclamation, protecting and caring for trees in East Palo Alto is important for addressing the disparities in canopy cover and ensuring all residents have access to the benefits of trees, including cleaner air and shade. After the proclamation, we planted a beautiful Silver Linden! Canopy thanks Mayor López and everyone who attended the proclamation today. We also want to thank everyone who has helped and supported us to plant and care for our urban forests. City of East Palo Alto - Government Arbor Day Foundation

Throwback to Wangari Maathai's visit to East Palo Alto for Canopy's 10th Anniversary Celebration Gala in 2006! Maathai was a Kenyan environmental and social activist and the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1977, she founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental organization that works at the intersection of women's rights, environmental conservation, and tree planting. As a community-based urban forestry organization, Canopy admires Maathai's community-engagement and advocacy with Kenyan women to steward their forests and foster community power. These photos are from Wangari Maathai's keynote speech at our 10th Anniversary Celebration Gala where we launched our East Palo Alto Tree Initiative with a ceremonial tree planting.
