I’m very excited about my new process, which is acrylic paint and college, using my own photographs, to create acrylic mixed media paintings. I had poo-poo’ed acrylic for years, having used it begrudgingly only a few times. I was recently reintroduced to acrylic paint, medium, gesso, modeling paste, collage and - whoa - it’s fantastic! I can get all of the same effects I get with oil paint and MORE and when done, it dries so fast! I am happy to have new techniques in my toolbelt and new affordable artwork to sell too! Two of these were juried into the new Gallery of Hermosa (opening tonight) and two will be in my booth at the Hermosa Beach Fine Arts Festival this weekend. I’m accepting commissions; already completed one that I’ll be delivering next week. Hit me up!

“Wave Riders” is a new original 12x24” acrylic with mixed media on gallery wrapped canvas. In person, you can see the collage elements in this painting - they are in the sky, the ocean, and the sand, and they are the wave riders and couple walking. Taken from my own photography, these elements blend with my paint to create something different from either paint or photography alone!

This new painting is the second of mine which will be available during the June juried show at the recently opened Gallery of Hermosa (GOH) in Hermosa Beach, CA.

“Surf Squad” is a brand new 12x16” acrylic with mixed media on gallery wrapped canvas. It will be available in the June “Game On” exhibition at the GOH. I’ll be at the opening reception (Kimie calls them opening parties 🎉) on Friday June 7th at 5pm. See you there, and if you can’t be there then, comment below and we’ll go another time. Let me know if you’re coming! 🏄🏼‍♀️🌊😎

Stay tuned for a second post - I have another new painting in this show!

Surf’s Up is a new 12x16 acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas. In addition to my Plein air painting, I’ve been inspired to get back into more abstract painting as well. An open studio workshop at the PVAC challenged me to work in acrylics and I’ve been having SO MUCH FUN with that! I hadn’t touched acrylics in over 25 years, however I had all the paints from projects with my kids. Once I started using them, I was in love with the immediacy of creating thick impasto paint OR transparent jewel-like washes AND using mixed media. I’ve already had to buy more paint! I’m having so much fun! Sharing more soon.

Going to tackle this outdoor display set up today so I’ll know how to do it on Saturday!

05/05/2024

The Lawn Show is starting! It’s an art show! On the lawn! I’m excited and a little nervous to be participating in my first outdoor art fair style event right here in my town. This Saturday May 11th, 10am-5pm, please stop by to see me and 20+ other artists from the Palos Verdes Art Center at the Malaga Cove Art on the Lawn Show. Each artist brings and sets up our own gear (think tents, tables, racks, art) and sells ORIGINAL artwork for the day (or two. I picked one day, Saturday, because, that felt right).

This morning I joined other LPAPA painters at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana for a paint out honoring Nellie Moulton. Nellie was a Plein air painter, rancher, and philanthropist. Paintings were juried and will be shown at the Fairhaven Memorial offices for the month of May. It was a beautiful morning with friends old and new!

Nellie “studied with renowned artists William Wendt, Edgar Payne, Anna Hills, and
Frank Cuprien. Her works reflect the rich beauty of nature and landscapes throughout
California and beyond. Nellie Gail Moulton was a lifetime member of the Laguna Beach Art Association (Laguna Art Museum) and served as their president from 1948-49. Her paintings are in the permanent collection at Bower’s Museum, Festival of the Arts, and Chapman University.” Excerpt is from this website:

Question for my artist friends who post to Instagram AND for the art admirers who follow us:

More text or less?
Multiple photos or just one?

Artists: Do you use (a lot of) or just a few? Why?

All: Do you follow as a way to expand your feed and see artwork you might like?

$1.15M is a great start!

MAJOR UPDATE! Los Angeles County has released its Recommended Budget (which is the first step in the budget process). For the first time in over 15 years, it proposes a $1.15M increase for our flagship Organizational Grant Program (OGP). Increasing OGP funding for arts organizations is a longtime goal, and much needed in the creative sector.

There are so many to thank—the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, our Arts Commissioners, our staff, OGP grantees and panelists past and present, and all the creative workers and community members who believe in, and fight for, arts access for the people of LA County.

The Recommended Budget will be presented to the Board next week at the annual Budget Hearing (see https://ceo.lacounty.gov/budget for info). We’ll keep you updated!

I got out to paint in Laguna for World Arts Day! I painted two and submitted one to the gallery.

Out framed Plein air paintings will be on exhibit at the LPAPA Gallery for the “Spring Fling Paint Out” show, opening Thursday April 18th and continuing through Monday April 29th.

The LPAPA Gallery is located on Gallery Row in Laguna Beach at 414 N. Coast Highway (between Jasmine and Myrtle Streets). Gallery hours are 11:00 am to 5:00 pm Thursday through Monday, and by appointment, with extended hours to 9:00 pm the First Thursday of each month.

Thanks for the opportunity, LPAPA!

Are we raining or are we shining? Catalina Island reminds me of Maui with the changeable weather and foggy mountains. Not as warm, but still lots of inspiration.

My beach dog painting is in a show! TAS (The Artists Studio) has a new show at the Malaga Cove Library Gallery in Palos Verdes Estates. I’ll be there this Wednesday April 10th from 2-4pm as a docent. Come by and see me, see the show!

Back home, thinking about waves…going to paint some soon.

Photos from Karen Doyle Fine Art's post 04/06/2024

I did a thing. I hiked to the top of Diamond Head! You may know that I’m taking two drugs for cancer treatment and still recovering from radiation treatment I completed last summer. I get winded carrying groceries up a flight of stairs. So this was a big deal! I booked the hike reservations without really thinking it through and later realized it would be a big challenge. That’s a good sign that I’m healing. My daughter waiting patiently for pics at the top was my motivation to complete the climb to the summit. I took my time, stopping as often as I needed. The views along the way were as gorgeous as the incredible view from the summit. Hiking Diamond Head with my daughter was a super inspiring way to end our trip to Oahu.

Scenes off the 101. I drove from Palos Verdes to San Luis Obispo today. I stopped in Montecito, Goleta, and Avila Beach along the way. I kept looking for orange poppies and found mostly yellow mustard. So beautiful.
