Welcome back Sea Kings!

Palos Verdes football cruises to win with fast start against St. Joseph 08/20/2023

Skoooo Kings Daily Breeze props for the first game of the year!

PALOS VERDES ESTATES — Freshman quarterback Ryan Rakowski and the Palos Verdes football team received a boost before even taking the field in Friday’s season opener against St. Joseph of Santa Maria.

Before Rakowski threw the first pass of his high school career, the Sea Kings had already been given a glimpse into how the game would play out.

Sean Winbush took the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and Eric Mulkey scored the first of his two touchdowns on the Sea Kings’ first drive, leading Palos Verdes to a 37-13 victory.

“Returning the opening kick for a touchdown was a good motivator,” Mulkey said. “It was great to come out and score on the first play. It definitely brought our energy up.”

Playing on both sides of the ball, Mulkey was a key component to helping the Sea Kings shut down St. Joseph’s vaunted running game behind University of Nevada commit Carter Vargas.

Vargas was held to 51 rushing yards in the first half. The tailback totaled 104 yards of offense for the game.

“We really had to focus on Vargas,” Mulkey said. “He’s a really good running back, and we came together and tackled as a team. We played physical and took away the run pretty well. That was the key coming in.”

While Palos Verdes’ defense was limiting Vargas and the Knights offense, the play of its special teams continued to provide energy.

Dabe Nwude blocked a punt early in the second quarter, setting up Mulkey’s second score to give the Sea Kings a 21-0 lead before Evan Aguirre’s interception set up another scoring drive.

“Our defense really stepped it up,” Mulkey said. “We were more physical today than in the past, but there is always room to improve and we can only go up from here.”

Nwude also recorded a quarterback sack and was in the backfield multiple times. Cole Spanjol and Michael Clemons recorded sacks as well.

Rakowski, the first freshman to start at quarterback under PV coach Guy Gardner, didn’t show any butterflies Friday. He connected with six different receivers and finished the game with 143 yards on 9-of-15 passing, including a late touchdown to Aguirre.

“I think getting a lead definitely helped (calm Rakowski) and it gave him more comfort ability to do his thing and throw the ball,” Mulkey said. “He’s a really good quarterback and would have been prepared no matter what.”

Mulkey and Hobbs Brannan helped lighten the load for Rakowski. The tandem accounted for three touchdowns and rushed for 115 yards.

Gardner knows there is still work to be done as the season goes on.

“I thought the overall effort was good, but there are a lot of things we can work on,” Gardner said. “It’s nice to be on the winning side, but we can work on ex*****on and the little things that aren’t so little. But I liked our energy and how we came out.”

Palos Verdes football cruises to win with fast start against St. Joseph The Sea Kings score on the opening kickoff and never look back in a season-opening win that avenges a 2022 loss to St. Joseph.
