Happy Thanksgiving.
“We can find happiness in protecting the world around us, not only because we cherish it for its awesome beauty, power, mystery, but because we cherish our fellow humans, those who live today and those who will live tomorrow." - Captain Jacques Cousteau
There is so much to be grateful for on our spectacular Water Planet, so let's take a moment to give thanks for the wonders of our world: its breathtaking beauty, life-sustaining ecosystems, and boundless inspiration for culture and science. 🙏🌊

The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau
0. Conshelf Adventure, Special,
September 15, 1966
Captain Cousteau introduces his first made-for-TV documentary, commissioned by ABC in 1966. The program charts the ground-breaking Conshelf III project, an experimental underwater habitat based over 100m deep in the Mediterranean Sea. Six divers lived in the specially constructed base for three weeks, paving the way for the future development of saturation diving. The program was so successful that a series was commissioned: the epic, decade-spanning odyssey of 'The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau'.
The Odyssey of the Cousteau Team

Narrated by Richard Johnson
Music by Lalo Schifrin
Produced by Jacques-Yves Cousteau
"All my life I have been driven by an insatiable curiosity and discoveries always fill me with aesthetic or spiritual joy but I also think that it will be the privilege of humans of our time to pe*****te this unknown realm and to take advantage of it while protecting it."
In 1962 and 63 Cousteau pioneered saturation diving with Conshelf 1 and Conshelf 2 the first human colonies on the ocean floor these experiments claimed for humankind the Continental Shelf, the shoulder of land that stretches from the shore line out to where the water is 600 feet deep. Part of the month-long experiment Conshelf was a deep house 100 feet below the surface. It was home and a diving base for 2 men during 7 days.
160 psi normal sea level atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psi
Conshelf = Continental Shelf Station
Conshelf I, 1962, depth of 10 meters or 33 feet, 2 men, 7 days, Marseille France. This was the first inhabited underwater habitat. Developed by Cousteau to record basic observations of life underwater.
Conshelf II. 1963, depth of 10 meters or 33 feet, 6 men, 30 days, in the Red Sea off Sudan, plus a deeper two-man deep cabin at 30 meters or 100 feet for 7 days. This was the first ambitious attempt for men to live and work on the sea floor.. They were among the first to breathe heliox, a mixture of helium and oxygen,
Conshelf III. 1965, depth of 102 meters or 336 feet, 6 men, 21 days, near Monaco.
Much of the work was funded in part by the French Petrochemical industry, who, along with Cousteau, hoped that such manned colonies could serve as base stations for the future exploitation of the sea. Such colonies did not find a productive future, however, as Cousteau later repudiated his support for such exploitation of the sea and put his efforts toward conservation. It was also found in later years that industrial tasks underwater could be more efficiently performed by undersea robot devices.

The Mote family is absolutely heartbroken to share that yesterday, April 29, our beloved resident manatee, Hugh, passed away unexpectedly.
After Hugh showed a change in his behavior earlier in the day, animal care staff began closely monitoring him. Saturday late afternoon, Hugh suddenly became unresponsive in his habitat at Mote Aquarium's Marine Mammal Center. Hugh’s Animal Care team responded immediately, and ultimately determined that Hugh had passed away.
A necropsy, or animal autopsy, including full pathology, will be performed by FWC’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute’s Marine Mammal Pathobiology Lab to determine his exact cause of death. The results of that process usually take about 8 or more weeks.
Hugh was 38 years old. He was born at Miami Seaquarium and arrived at Mote from ZooTampa on May 2, 1996, where he served as an ambassador for his species, and routinely and voluntarily took part in manatee research studies. Hugh, and his brother Buffett, are the world’s only manatees to participate in voluntary, detailed behavioral research designed to aid manatee conservation. Hugh’s indelible and lasting legacy will be one of an invaluable contribution to the scientific understanding of manatee behavior and contributions to the conservation of his species.
Our team is forever grateful for the time we had with Hugh and his contribution to manatee conservation, and we are proud of our staff and volunteers for the level of care we provide to all the animals at Mote Aquarium.
Hugh was a beloved part of the Mote family and Sarasota/Manatee County community. We appreciate all the love and support as we collectively mourn his passing.
Please join us in remembering Hugh's incredible life by sharing your favorite memory of him below.

Next Tuesday, January 10, we'll host our first REEF Fish & Friends of the year. We're excited to welcome our speaker, Dr. Jim Bohnsack, Retired NOAA Fisheries Biologist and past REEF Scientific Advisor. He will discuss the effects of marine reserves and climate change on Florida Keys fish species, and their responses to varying environmental conditions. 🐟
REEF Fish & Friends is a free monthly seminar and social series held at the REEF Campus in Key Largo, Florida. Each month features a guest speaker who shares an ocean-related topic. The evening begins with a social at 6:15, and followed by the presentation from 7-8.
If you aren't able to attend in person, the presentation will be livestreamed on our page and our YouTube channel. (www.youtube.com/WeSpeakFish)
We hope to see you there - and if not, we hope you can tune in virtually! 🖥️
