When the library bus rumbles out of Kabul, Afghanistan in the morning it is still dark in. There are chairs, tables and shelves of books instead of bus seats. And there is Pari, who is nervously starting her first day as Mama's library helper to hand out notebooks and pencils at the villages and the refugee camp. The girls they visit are learning to write English from Mama. Next year, Pari will go to school and learn also. And she is lucky Mama tells her, girls were not allowed to read before.

Check out our display of wordless picture books in Youth Services!
Full of vivid illustrations, these picture books show us that words are not the only form of communication. When children read these books, not only are they building visual literacy by drawing meaning from the images on the page, they are also learning about story structure, context clues, and using their imagination.
This is a great way for children who may be struggling with learning to read or who may process their world through images rather than words to build confidence in their reading skills and experience the joys of literature without any barriers.
