In our season 7 finale of The St. Andrews Jezebel Podcast, I had the honor of meeting with Patricia McNeal at Floriopolis. Patricia a remarkable woman who accomplished an incredible feat of riding her bike across the United States. Starting in Florida ending her journey in California. Her story is one of overcoming adversity, determination, and achieving her dream, and it left me feeling inspired and in awe.

During our conversation, Patricia shared her journey of recovering from a life-altering stroke and how she refused to let her circumstances define her. Her unwavering determination and her relentless pursuit of her dream taught me that no matter how daunting the path may seem, perseverance is key to achieving our goals.

Patricia's bike ride across America was not without its hurdles. Along her route, she encountered unforeseen setbacks that tested her resolve. However, nothing prepared her for the unimaginable impact of Hurricane Michael, which struck our hometown of Panama City, Florida just after she embarked on her journey. Witnessing the devastation, I couldn't help but marvel at Patricia's strength as she faced yet another immense challenge. She showed me that setbacks do not define us; it's how we respond to them that truly matters. Patricia's determination to return home and rebuild her community was an inspiring testament to the indomitable human spirit.

Throughout our conversation, Patricia's story transcended her personal journey. It became a beacon of hope for stroke survivors and anyone facing their own struggles. Her unwavering spirit and commitment to overcome adversity, one pedal at a time, left an indelible mark on my heart.

I encourage you to listen to Patricia's incredible journey on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Join me in celebrating the power of the human spirit and the indomitable resilience that lies within each of us. Let Patricia's story inspire you to pursue your dreams, no matter how challenging they may seem.

The Cosmic Rascals: Unveiling Arcadia

The Cosmic Rascals, a band based in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, recently released their album Arcadia, which is definitely worth a listen. In the upcoming episode of The St. Andrews Jezebel Podcast band members Scott Rockwood and Matt Miller discussed the origins of their name and musical philosophy, as well as their experience recording at Sawhorse Studios in St. Louis.

The band's name, “The Cosmic Rascals," reflects their blend of spirituality and mischievousness. According to Scott, the name was inspired by a documentary about Miles Davis, in which Carlos Santana referred to Davis as a "divine cosmic rascal." The band members embrace this philosophy in their music, creating a sound that is both spiritual and playful.

Their album, Arcadia, was recorded at Sawhorse Studios in St. Louis. The band describes the studio as a cozy and creative environment, with eclectic decor and great sound treatments. Despite the music industry's current focus on singles, The Cosmic Rascals decided to release a full album. They believe that an album provides its own context and framework around the music, and allows listeners to experience a journey from start to finish.

Arcadia takes you on a journey. Each track stands on its own, but there are underlying themes that play off each other and build upon each other throughout the album. The Cosmic Rascals describe their music as a blend of spirituality and mischievousness, and this is evident in the album's sound. From the upbeat "Arcadia" to the more introspective Bigger Louder Faster" the album takes you on a journey that is both emotional and fun.

One highlight of the interview was hearing about the band's experience recording at Sawhorse Studios. The studio is in St. Louis and the band members describe it as a cozy and creative environment. The studio's owner, Jason McIntyre, made the recording process effortless, and his quick work allowed the band members to explore their creativity freely.

Despite the industry's focus on singles, The Cosmic Rascals believe in the power of an album. In the interview, Matt describes albums as "a piece of art that's its own thing." The band members believe that an album provides a full musical journey for listeners, and allows them to experience the music as the band intended.

If you're looking for something unique and captivating, give The Cosmic Rascals and their album Arcadia a listen. It's a musical experience that's both divine and mischievous, spiritual and playful. From the cozy atmosphere of Sawhorse Studios to the themes that run throughout the album, Arcadia is a journey that's worth taking. So sit back, relax, and let The Cosmic Rascals take you on a journey through the cosmos on The St. Andrews Jezebel Podcast Thursday, April 27th wherever you get your podcasts.

Justin takes us on a journey through the history of Little Village, from humble beginnings to its current status as a local favorite. He'll share the inspiration behind the food, the challenges of running a restaurant, and the exciting developments at Little Village, including the recent addition of a full barista bar and smoothies, as well as the construction of a Palapa on the back deck for live music events. Whether you're a foodie or just love a good success story, you won't want to miss this episode! Tune in to the St. Andrews Jezebel podcast to hear the full interview with Justin Buxton.

The Beginning of Little Village

Finn's on the Beach opened in 2009 and eventually made its way to St. Andrews in 2012, inside the small Little Village. Justin and his wife Karen started with a simple idea - to spotlight the fish taco. At the time, they didn't know of any place in the area that served fish tacos. So they decided to fill the void in the market and create their own spot. The space was about the size of a food truck, but it quickly became a community favorite.

Inspiration for the Menu

Justin developed the recipes for the menu himself, drawing from his love of fresh food and bold flavors from his travels in South Florida and his Louisiana roots. He aimed to create a unique and flavorful menu that would stand out from the crowd. While employees have contributed some specials over the years, the basic menu was created by Justin. Though it has evolved over time, the menu has remained true to its roots of fresh, bold flavors.

The Challenges Of Running A Resturant

Running a restaurant is no easy feat, and Justin talks about the challenges that come with it. It's not just about cooking great food - it requires attention to detail, from managing employees to taking care of paperwork and bills. Justin admits that it's a lot of work, but he believes it's worth it because of the community they've built. They've created a small, grassroots business that keeps it simple and fresh while making a positive impact on the community.

Becoming A Treasured Spot for Fresh and Vibrant Flavors

As the sun sets on Little Village in St. Andrews, the aroma of Justin Buxton's fresh and bold flavors lingers in the air. The quaint restaurant is a local favorite and a hidden gem among the streets of this charming Florida town. With its welcoming atmosphere and mouth-watering dishes, it's no wonder that diners keep coming back for more.

Set back in a peaceful hideaway near Beck Ave. Little Village is a culinary destination for both tourists and locals alike. The restaurant's menu is a fusion of unique flavors that blend together to create a dining experience that is both satisfying and memorable.

Justin Buxton's passion for cooking is evident in every dish that comes out of his tiny kitchen. From fish tacos to signature dishes like The Todd Bowl, Justin's attention to detail and commitment to quality is what sets Little Village apart from the rest.

Little Village is not just a restaurant, but an experience that offers more than just sumptuous food. The warm and inviting atmosphere of the place, featuring cozy lighting and comfortable seating, is enhanced by the presence of local art and live music, creating a sense of community and belonging. The big beautiful palapa hut that overlooks Lake Ware adds to the charm of the place, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a day at the beach or celebrate special moments with loved ones.

If you're looking for a truly authentic culinary experience in the heart of Florida Panhandle, Little Village is a must-visit. With its flavorful dishes, welcoming atmosphere, and dedication to quality, it's no wonder that this restaurant has become a beloved community favorite.

Great night and great people!

04/04/2023

In an upcoming episode of the St. Andrews Jezebel podcast which will premier April 6th I had the pleasure of interviewing Britt Gonzalez, the author of 'We are All Wildflowers.' During the interview, Britt shared valuable insights on writing and the creative process, emphasizing the importance of discipline, play, and self-trust.

Inspired by her words, we've put together a blog post exploring the three best practices for aspiring writers. By following these practices, writers can unlock their full potential and create work that truly resonates with their audience.

Practice #1: Have a Schedule

One of the most important practices for any aspiring writer is to have a schedule. As Britt suggests, having a commitment to when you are going to write, come hell or high water, is crucial. It doesn't matter if you prefer to write on your iPad or with pen and paper – what matters is that you stick to it. Start with something manageable, like 10 minutes a day, and gradually work your way up. As James Clear writes in 'Atomic Habits,' it's important to start small and build momentum. By creating a consistent writing schedule, aspiring writers can develop their craft and make progress towards their writing goals.

Practice #2: Find Ways to Have Play

Another practice that aspiring writers should adopt is finding ways to have play. As Britt notes, we are starved for play, and it is essential for revitalizing our creative senses. Whether it's taking yourself on a date, going to a local comedy show, or doodling in a park, finding ways to play can help aspiring writers tap into their imagination and generate fresh ideas. As Julia Cameron suggests in 'The Artist's Way,' having regular artist states can help us connect with ourselves and explore our creativity in a fun and playful way.

Practice #3: Trust Yourself

The third and final practice for aspiring writers is to trust themselves. As Stephen King writes in 'On Writing,' it's important to write with the door closed and edit with the door open. In other words, aspiring writers should focus on writing first and worry about editing later. By trusting their instincts and writing from a place of authenticity, aspiring writers can create work that is truly unique and resonant. As Britt notes, it's easy to get caught up in seeking validation from others, but the key to success is to look inside and find everything in yourself and nature to whom your whole life is devoted.

As we wrap up, remember that there are three key practices that can help us unlock our full potential and create written work that truly resonates with our audience. First, it's important to have a schedule and stick to it, even if it's just 10 minutes a day. Second, we need to make time for play, to let our imaginations run wild and explore our creativity. And last but not least, we must trust ourselves and our writing instincts, and not let fear or doubt hold us back. So, let's all embrace these practices and keep writing from the heart, because that's when the real magic happens. Don't forget, we are all wildflowers, and together, we can flourish and grow as writers.

Don't miss out on the latest episode of the St. Andrews Jezebel podcast featuring the talented author Britt Gonzalez!

Today is National Mom-and-Pop Business Owners Day!

Our economy and Historic St. Andrews couldn’t run without small mom-and-pop businesses. They create economic growth and provide almost 70% of all new jobs in the country.

The holiday was established by Rick and Margie Segel in honor of their parents and the successful hat shop they opened in 1939 and grew into a 10,000-square-foot, $2 million dollar clothing shop. It is a special day to appreciate the long hours, hard work, and dedication it takes to run a small business. Head to your favorite small business today to say thank you!
