FACT! You've probably heard that carrots are good for your eyes, and it's true. Carrots are a super source of beta-carotene. But it takes a whole lot more to protect your vision. Your eyes rely on tiny arteries for oxygen and nutrients, just as your heart relies on much larger arteries. Because of this, fruits and veggies can definitely keep your eyes healthy.
Children who are at high risk of progressive myopia due to family history, early age of onset, and extended periods of near work may benefit from treatment options that can reduce the progression of myopia. At Paramount Family Optometry, Dr. Merino specializes in the management of myopia.
If you have questions or would like to learn more about myopia management please call our office and schedule a free consultation with Dr. Merino.
Myopia affects nearly 30% of the US population.* The prevalence of myopia is increasing rapidly, and children are getting myopia earlier.
Myopia is not just a refractive error that requires eyeglasses to see clearly. Myopia is a common eye disease caused by the elongation of the eye or curved cornea. Myopia happens because the eyes grow excessively long at the back. The result is blurred vision because the light entering the eye is not focused correctly. At Paramount Family Optometry, Dr. Merino specializes in the management of myopia.

There may be other culprits for your dry eyes that are not directly connected to dry eye syndrome according to the American Optometric Association. Reasons for your eyes to feel dry could include:
✅Antihistamines, antidepressants, and birth-control pills
✅Dirty, old, or improperly fitted contacts
✅Dry air caused by indoor heaters and/or ceiling fans
✅Allergies
✅Long hours in front of a computer or digital device
If you suspect you may have dry eye syndrome or any of the above causing your dry eyes, it’s best to visit your eye doctor to explore options. During your eye exam, your doctor can check for vision problems and signs of health conditions that could result in dry eyes. An accurate diagnosis is important!

According to the Mayo Clinic, dry eye syndrome could be the main source of symptoms—it occurs when your supply of tears becomes insufficient in lubricating and nourishing your eyes. Although it can happen at any age, typically dry eye syndrome happens over time and most commonly in people over 40.

The most common vision disorders children experience are refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. These errors occur when light is not focused on the retina and results in blurry vision. Some signs a child you know may have a refractive error include:
🍎Squinting
🍎Holding materials close to their face or at arm’s length
🍎Frequent headaches
🍎Rubbing their eyes
Thankfully, most refractive errors can be corrected with prescription glasses or contacts. An eye doctor can identify these vision issues and determine the prescription needed.
By incorporating these 5 simple practices into your eyewear care routine, you not only protect your investment of glasses, but also ensure that your glasses consistently remain clean, clear, and comfortable all year long.
