The first IMPACT book I ever made was for my husband, back in 2014. He was approaching thirty, and told me he didn’t feel like he had done anything to make an impact on this world. The crazy thing was that, at the time, Joel was a husband, new father, pastor, youth pastor, YoungLife leader, soccer coach, and volunteering in other ways too. I sat there stunned as I listened to him. In my opinion, Joel was one of those people who was making a larger impact than most people I knew. I am a problem solver by nature. I wanted to figure out how I could make sure he knew that he WAS making an impact... he WAS making a difference. So I reached out to everyone I could that knew Joel and I asked them if they could answer 1-3 questions for me. 1) What is your favorite memory with Joel? 2) How has Joel impacted your life? 3) How has Joel helped you? I got SO many responses. I put them all in a book and separated them by sections. So all of the answers of memories were in the first section, all of the impact in the next, and the helped in the last. I gave it to him on his 27th birthday. After looking through the book he looked at me with tears streaming down his face and said, “I had no idea...” He’s since told me that book helped him through a really dark time. Recognizing that who he was and how he was showing up for those around him was enough and making a difference helped to shift how he viewed himself and his value in the world around him. In late 2016, I realized I needed to make this a thing. This needed to be something that others could give to people in their life so they knew were making a difference. And so we set off to start IMPACT. Since our inception in 2017, we’ve had the honor of making over 250 IMPACT books for over 250 incredible people.
