When your trust and partnership is strong, it’s ok to take a long spot to an open oxer at stride. While I would have loved to get a perfect spot, the last thing I wanted to do was force the add. We were already at a hearty gallop, and I didn’t want to mess with his rhythm or balance unless absolutely necessary. Salty was totally unfazed, knew what he had to do, and was happy to do it.
What a spectacular beast
Sometimes you just gotta smile and roll with it 🤷♀️
What a SUPERSTAR!! Salty lead the Open Prelim division from start to finish. He gave me a lovely ride in dressage, and only added a little time on xc with no jumping faults all weekend. He was a beast on xc, was confident in the water without schooling, and didn’t question anything. He even saved my butt when I messed up a jump in SJ. Most exciting, we have our qualification for 6 y/o Championships at Morven in October. So very proud of this spectacular animal. I could not ask for a better partner 💜💜💜
Morning zoomies, courtesy of the four year old. Aspen didn’t have the same zest for life as Tuli did this morning.
We loved the opportunity to get to school on the beautiful course at Bayou Gulch. The recent rain made for perfect footing. Both Chase and Eva did their first novice xc jump. Jenna worked on rebuilding Pilot’s confidence, and Mackensie tackled her fears of galloping hills and easily bopped around training. Salty got to do some hill work as well before Archer.
One thing that has remains consistent across not only all years, but all shows, is Salty being the goodest boi. Always happy to go anywhere with or without friends, and always on the buckle to and from every phase… the only exception was when we TE’d at Pine Top and were pulled mid-course. Salty was a little jiggy then because he was pi**ed he didn’t get to finish, but that was literally the only time he has even not been the coolest dude out and about.
Today, we’ll look at Salty’s development from age 4-6 on xc over brush jumps. So bold and confident… and for ally “brushing through” rather than launching over.
Today’s study: Show jumping, quite possibly Salty’s favorite phase. He’s always been a lovely jumper, but the style and polish just keep getting better and better.
We all know I’m obsessed with Salty, and I feel like a lot of you out there are as well. I am also obsessed with Jj Sillman’s pictures of him as well as his development from his 4 y/o year to where he is now (at 6). So, over the next few days, I am going to do daily posts of different phases across those years, with JJ being the photographer for the 5 and 6 year old years. What a sexy beast Salty has become 😍. The first picture will be current from this past week at Bayou Gulch, and both his 4 and 5 year old pictures will be from his YEH qualifier for that year.
My goodness 😍😍. I said it felt perfect, but seeing it is pretty damn cool too. Thank you Jj Sillman for the perfect photo of my perfect boy.
Salty was truly amazing today. He did literally everything I asked of him exactly how I asked. My initial plan we to run a prelim pace knowing I was going to school the second water, but as we climbed the first big hill, I realized the last time I ran him with speed was in May 😳. So, even though he felt super, I laid off the gas pedal just a little bit as the most important thing for me is to keep him gaining confidence and loving his job from start to finish. Does it sting that I gave away first place by 0.1 point. Yes, but I could not be more pleased with the run we had today. I did school the water, and that took 12 seconds (we were over time by 18 seconds). However, he was so bold through both waters, he may just be getting it, and maybe the water schoolings will soon become a thing of the past. Big picture: Salty won the day!
It’s not every show where all the hard work comes together as you’ve hoped, so you certainly appreciate it when it does. Today Salty laid down a lovely dressage test and just a stellar show jumping round putting us in first at the end of day one. Let’s see if we can put it all together tomorrow for cross country as well. But, for now, I’m just going to revel in how lovely Salty was today. ☺️
Anyone want to take bets on how many are still in in the morning?
So pleased with how Salty felt bopping around some prelim jumps in his last schooling before Bayou Gulch this weekend. Looking forward to getting him on the new course!
As always, we had so much fun at Jump Fest at Platinum Farms, LLC; www.platinumfarms.org yesterday. Five pairs went, and all had positive, successful experiences.
I am extra happy to report that Chase and Cy have got their mojo back and were super stars in the arena as well as the xc course. Halle had a grand time blazing around with Westley, as this was both Halle’s birthday and her last adventure with Westley before she goes to college. Eva and Froggy were solid as usual and gained experience and confidence at the BN level. Tuli was a “tad” overwhelmed initially but finished so confident and So much fun on xc. Jonathan Horowitz and Dos are ironing out some details to continue dominating at the Novice level. Go team!
My noble steed 😂
We took the “water weenies”, Salty and Cy, on an educational adventure to both Archer and Sunrise. They both just need exposure and repetition to gain confidence with the water. We couldn’t help but jump a few other things as well. I also really loved going up with Chase. It was the first time we went somewhere with horses just the two of us 🥰
A little different jump lesson for Salty today. This course has at least one jump from every level, starter through prelim. The goal is to get some consistency in our canter/gallop regardless of the height of the jump. Yes, I took a flyer to the Prelim Oxer, but I definitely was not going to let him come in soft and add to that. I guess we were just reliving our jumper fun from the horse park last week.
We have joked that if Salty doesn’t make it as a 5* Eventer, his Backup will be Grand Prix Jumpers. Well, that might not be a joke anymore. He’s had a stellar two days at The Colorado Horse Park. Today he was one of three to jump clear in the 1.15m, and after the jump off he finished second! This is:
-his first jumper show
- his second round in the massive international arena
- his first ever full round at this height (including schooling)
Let me also add that this all felt incredibly easy for him. What a super star! I don’t even have words to express how proud I am of this guy. As always, Thank you to my amazing coach Todd of Gemini Farm. I am not shy about saying that he has made us the pair we are today.
“The Little Arab That Could”
But instead of “I think I can” he says “I Know I can (and I love it)!”
Three Super G members are moonlighting as Jumpers this week. We went and schooled today in prep for our first classes tomorrow. I can not thank Todd and Adrienne of Gemini Farm enough for inviting us and allowing us to join their crew. It was also very comforting that the first person we saw when we got there was Alexia Honegger, who was thrilled to see a crew of crazy Eventers. Looking forward to a fun week!
Yeeeesssss! Mackensie Lindell and Sussy finally had their day. It’s been a long process of Mack learning this talented but sensitive horse. Mack has put in the time, effort, and energy needed throughout including recently after having to withdraw at the last show because Suss was a bit out of whack physically. This girl’s got the drive and dedication though, not only learning Suss, but also a new level. She’s learning that being an Eventer means taking the good with the bad, and that “learning experiences” and challenging days and shows are unavoidable and part of the sport. Yesterday, I saw them as a true team, and it made me so proud. Keep up the work kid, it’s paying off! Mackensie and Sussy finished third at Round Top, only adding a little time ( no one made time) to their dressage score of 31.7 👏👏
I can’t tell you how much I loved seeing Jared and Carrera compete at The Colorado Horse Park today. When he came to try Carrera originally, I just knew he was her person, and I was absolutely right. I’ve loved watching their journey, and seeing them compete today was just icing on the cake.
It’s that special time of the year when our resident barn lion emerges. Quiao is absolutely miserable in the heat with her long black coat. Don’t worry, there will be some finishing touches. She’s so good that we just clip her while holding her (no sedation or force). We clip her over multiple sessions, and she is quite happy with the whole process.
Get yourself a horse that puts this kind of smile on your face 💖
Whew, that was a robust outing at Mile High. Three (of the four we took) started as true broncs- feel free to guess who those were 🙃. But!! All ended so very well, and it was great to see the progress from sketchy (at best) to really rideable great partnerships. Love days like this.
Pic of the day!
It was a very productive outing at Mile High today with five green pairs. Three of the pairs had one member who had not been to Mile High before, and two pairs (Bailey and Westley, and Chase and Cy) had not been there together. All pairs made it into the water and over jumps, ditches, etc appropriate for their level. We go back tomorrow was some more experienced pairs.
