MATERIALS SPOTLIGHT: These four wooden blocks, each containing 10 cylinders with k***s, are a beloved part of Montessori primary classrooms. Each cylinder fits into a corresponding hole in the blocks and the four sets of cylinders show all the differences in dimension that exist in objects: width, breadth, and height. Children take out each cylinder and mix them in front of the block. As they find the corresponding hole for each cylinder, they are refining their visual discrimination of dimension. Because they hold each cylinder with a pincer grip on the k**b on top, they are also strengthening their hands for the grip required to hold a pencil for writing. Another delightful aspect of the cylinder blocks is that they have a built-in control of error. If the last piece doesn’t fit, children realize they have made a mistake and can try replacing cylinders until they find the correct match. This offers a friendly way for children to notice their own mistakes so that success with materials comes through their own efforts and not through an adult dictating what is correct or incorrect.

Montessori History…

THIS MONTH IN MONTESSORI HISTORY:

In April 1949, Maria Montessori went to Pakistan at the invitation of her student Gool Minwalla to give a month-long training course in which she was assisted by her son Mario and her student Albert Joosten (whose mother Rosalie Joosten-Chotzen had been instrumental in starting the Montessori movement in Holland).

Gool Minwalla was privileged to have both studied and collaborated with Dr. Montessori, who greatly respected her. As the leading figure in launching the Montessori movement in Pakistan, Mrs. Minwalla's passion and dedication were key to establishing the training program. This initiative not only transformed early childhood education there but also enabled numerous women to achieve financial independence.

This training course was inaugurated by Pakistan’s minister of education at the Jamshed Memorial Hall. During this stay, the Montessori Pakistani Association was founded.

Before she left Pakistan, her students showed their appreciation by adorning her with garlands of flowers and presented her with a large cake in the shape of a book, with the text ‘The Secret of Childhood – With Gratitude to You Who Discovered It’.
