Council Post: Resolving The Critical Metals Shortage To Meet Net-Zero Goals—Part 1 09/14/2023

Climate change is a global crisis & the Paris Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the temperature change to 2 degrees Celsius by 2050 requires a massive transformation of our energy system, and massive amounts of critical metals for producing batteries. But the demand for battery critical metals will increase by 500% by 2050.

In Part 1 of this Forbes Business article, our CEO and cofounder Oliver Gunasekara explores 2 of the 3 potential solutions to solve the upcoming battery shortage.

Council Post: Resolving The Critical Metals Shortage To Meet Net-Zero Goals—Part 1 Transitioning to a low-carbon economy requires massive amounts of critical metals for producing batteries and other clean energy technologies.

Ancient treasures kilometres under the sea 09/13/2023

“We’re never going to understand all the animals that live in the sediment. So we have to engineer in a way to protect them.”

The Sydney Morning Herald spoke with our cofounder and director Renee Grogan about our disruptive selective harvesting technology that hovers over the seabed and uses artificial intelligence originally developed for fruit picking to check if there is life on a nodule, harvesting only those that appear uninhabited.

A clean-energy future may depend on seabed mining 08/01/2023

"While there remain some questions about the costs and environmental effects in the search for new sources of metals, the many opportunities for a green future are unlikely to be met without seabed mining. Without access to the minerals needed to meet the demand for electric cars and reduce carbon emissions, our hoped-for green energy future will be in peril."

Under a proposed regulation unveiled by the California Air Resources Board new big rigs and other trucks will have to be zero-emissions in 2040 — ending their decades-long reliance on high-polluting diesel.

The proposed rule could put about 510,000 carbon-free medium & heavy-duty vehicles on California’s roads in 2035, increasing to 1.2 million in 2045 and nearly 1.6 million in 2050, according to the air board.

Currently there are only 1,943 zero emission medium and heavy duty vehicles on the state’s roads, and nearly all of them are buses.
