It is absolutely unacceptable that 611 immigrant children who were torn away from their parent(s) by the Trump administration have still not been reunited with their parents. Legal justice for these children and their families will never be enough to compensate for the willful destruction of these children’s families. Still, the Trump administration must be held accountable, and these separation policies must NEVER be repeated.

Watchdog report reveals that DOJ was not prepared for family separations. On Thursday, a report from the DOJ inspector general revealed that Former AG Jeff Sessions knew early on that migrant families would be separated as a result of the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy. At one point, Sessions emphasized to US attorneys that “we need to take away children,” according to notes from the call cited in Thursday’s report. The policy was announced in 2018, and lawyers are still unable to reach the parents of 611 children who had been split from their families by U.S. border officials between 2017 and 2018.

In his final days, new regulations were written under Trump that made it almost impossible for immigrants to qualify for political asylum. The regulations were challenged in court by immigration rights’ advocates and, for now, cannot go into effect.

Biden will have a great opportunity to correct Trump’s egregious rules. It is now time for an enlightened immigration system.
