ArtCenter is in Detroit 🇺🇸!
The students on our Learning from Detroit program are learning about the competing visions for the future of Detroit - once the epicenter of the US auto industry - as imagined by residents, organizers, policy makers, artists, activists, and scholars. Their partnership with local organizations has facilitated access to key sites in Detroit and allowed students to incorporate community immersion and social engagement into the creative process. What can artists and designers learn from and contribute to the communities of Detroit? These students are finding out! 🇺🇸🏙📝🌳🚗

In addition to being based out of Modena, students are also visiting Florence, Piacenza, Carpi, Mantova, and Parma (pictured here)!

Our Future Craft China program - a collaboration between ArtCenter’s Environmental Design department and Tongji University's College of Design & Innovation - is currently in full swing! Students on this program are working in teams to envision new opportunities for design that will revive craft traditions and create social impact within artisan communities in Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. China has achieved extraordinary levels of economic growth and development; yet with such stunning gains, what risks being lost? As China continues to advance, how might we bring traditional Chinese craft into daily life? As our students collaborate with local artisans, they have begun to understand their needs and aspirations as well as how design can make an impact.

The redevelopment group is focused on documenting the space, which is filled with cool art and graffiti, during their redevelopment process. This is a rare opportunity for students to legally and safely enter a vacant yet historically significant Detroit space - see the link in our bio for more info or to apply!

8/25/17 - 9/7/17:
This sustainable design studio offered an exciting, hands-on experience in biomimicry, biodiversity, and next nature. Students studied nature's biological forms and systems, and speculated nature's time-tested strategies to solve human design problems. Based on their immersive explorations and workshops in one of the most bio-diverse places on the planet, students then created new paradigms for how we live, work and play. A critical component of the studio was pushing towards an intelligent, performative, more sustainable future.
The students' retreat and eco-lodge was located on the central pacific coast of Costa Rica, which is considered an ecological transition zone. Just north are the tropical dry forest, and to the south are the humid rainforests. Field trips and guided tours coincided with sustainable, biomimicry, ecological design, and research exercises. Their activities included nature walks, horseback riding, night hiking in the rainforest, assisting with turtle migration, and camping in the jungle.
Testlab Berlin: Californication was one of our Summer 2017 programs. Hosted by Grad Graphics, the project explored the "brand equity" of the Golden State, how it relates to the rest of the US, and what LA and Berlin can learn from each other. Graphic Design student Alicia Rangel commented, "I'm being more experimental, more expressive. Every week I wake up with another idea of how to be."

8/24/17 - 9/6/17:
During this program, students experienced Japanese culture and craft via a trip to Kyoto, a city as rich in its history and tradition as it is in its forward thinking. Here, students participated in a series of hands-on workshops, lectures, and outings in cooperation with Kyoto Seika University. Upon returning to ArtCenter, they then used their newfound knowledge and insights to reexamine Southern Californian design. As the program was a hybrid of both Surface and Product Design, students developed both a design pattern and home good product, providing them the unique opportunity to develop pattern and product side by side. During the course of the term, they also learned the history and tradition of textile design, and product development techniques with an eye towards cultural sensitivity and expression.
