Giant Magellan Telescope Launches Universo Expansivo Program to Enhance Accessibility in Astronomy Education
With support from Parque Explora, Red Aprender, and leading community organizations across Chile and the United States, the Giant Magellan Telescope launches Universo Expansivo, a free multisensory astronomy education program for both informal and formal learning environments. https://giantmagellan.org/2024/09/30/giant-magellan-telescope-launches-universo-expansivo-program-to-enhance-accessibility-in-astronomy-education/

Giant Magellan Telescope Mount Fabrication Begins
Manufacturing and assembly of the largest telescope mount built in the United States has begun. In partnership with Ingersoll Machine Tools and OHB Digital Connect, fabrication of the 39-meter-tall precision moving structure is taking place across multiple states over the next six years. When complete, the mount will be shipped to the Giant Magellan Telescope site in Chile for reassembly. https://giantmagellan.org/2024/08/28/giant-magellan-telescope-mount-fabrication-begins/

Giant Magellan Telescope Enclosure Ready for Construction
Set to be one of the world’s largest mechanized smart buildings, the Giant Magellan Telescope enclosure passed its final design review and is now ready for construction in Chile. https://giantmagellan.org/2024/06/13/giant-magellan-telescope-enclosure-ready-for-construction/

The vernal equinox marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator. Enjoy today's #FirstDayofSpring in the Northern Hemisphere and #FirstDayofFall in the Southern Hemisphere.

Making Giant Mirrors from Stars
#ICYMI The Glass Age, featured in National Geographic's February issue, went behind the scenes on how the Giant Magellan mirrors are made. Diving deeper, here’s how chemical elements come full circle to build the world’s largest optical mirrors. https://giantmagellan.org/2024/02/27/making-giant-mirrors-from-stars/

Fourth-Generation Technology Will Change the Future of Ground-Based Observing
Thanks to this technology, the optical clarity in next generation ground-based telescopes will surpass even that of space telescopes: https://giantmagellan.org/2023/12/07/fourth-generation-technology-will-change-the-future-of-ground-based-observing/

Joe Orr Family Foundation Stargazing Terrace
With deep appreciation, we’d like to thank the Joe Orr Family Foundation for their contribution to the Giant Magellan Telescope. To commemorate their support, we’ve established The University of Texas at Austin Joe Orr Family Foundation Stargazing Terrace, an ideal spot to take in views of the Andes in Chile’s Atacama Desert. #NationalPhilanthropyDay Credit: Pavel Friedmann

Final Mirror Fabrication Begins
Our seventh mirror is in the making at The University of Arizona Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab, the last required to complete the set. https://giantmagellan.org/2023/09/26/the-giant-magellan-telescopes-final-mirror-fabrication-begins/

In celebrating 200 years of diplomatic relations between Chile and the USA, Las Campanas Observatory, the Giant Magellan Telescope, and the US Embassy in Chile hosted a workshop in La Serena to promote women's #STEM careers among girls in the Chilean fourth region. #ChileEEUU200

Extrasolar Digital Art Contest
With just over 5,000 confirmed extrasolar planets and counting, we can begin to imagine what the billions of planets in the Universe may be like. In partnership with Antenna Foundation, we invite you to share your extrasolar digital creations. Creators may submit their videos through the end of July 2023 for a chance to win up to $5 million pesos. Submission details at www.extrasolar.cl.

Astronomy Day
Celebrate International #AstronomyDay this weekend by taking in the wonders of the night sky. Happy stargazing. 🔭✨

Giant Magellan Telescope Mirror Cover
OHB Italia S.p.A has finished manufacturing and testing the first of seven mirror covers for the Giant Magellan Telescope. In just over two minutes, the covers will deploy and retract in unison to protect the world’s largest mirrors when they’re not in use. Video credit: OHB Digital Connect GmbH
