Our Story

The Giant Magellan Telescope, expected to be in operation by the late 2020's, will have 10 times the resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope and will be located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile at about 8,000 feet. The Atacama Desert is one of the driest places on earth, far away from city lights and close to the calm high-altitude Pacific ocean air making it one of the best places on earth for the next generation of giant-class telescopes like the GMT. The GMT mirrors, each 27-feet in diameter, will form an effective collecting area about 82 feet in diameter, dwarfing any telescope now in operation. The Giant Magellan Telescope will herald a golden age of exploration of the origin and evolution of the universe, witnessing early galaxy formation, streamlining investigation of black holes, quasars, neutron stars, dark energy and dark matter, and directly imaging extra-solar planets that might harbor life, addressing the question, are we alone?
