Meet the band performing at the Pasadena Greek Fest! 🎉
The Greek Rebetiko Trio was formed in 2014 in Boston, MA. The band has performed over 200 shows in the US, including some of the country’s most prestigious folk festivals like the Montana Folk Festival and the Lowell Folk Festival. They have been interviewed and given live performances on NY Kosmos Radio, LA Greek Radio, and Grecian Echoes in Boston. The GRT became widely known in Los Angeles through their highly successful, sold-out “concert-presentation” shows and have collaborated through these with prestigious institutions such as UCLA, Berklee College of Music, and Clark University. They are also the only rebetiko band to have performed sold-out shows at both a Western saloon and a sushi bar! The band’s goal is to introduce audiences to the origins and rich cultural heritage of Greek music, as well as to bring people from any cultural background together.
Rebetiko or Rebetika, often called “The Greek Blues,” is a form of Greek urban folk music that originated between the 1920s and 1950s. The word rebetiko is derived from the adjective rebetis, which was used to describe a person with aspects of character, behavior, morals and dress associated with a particular subculture. The earliest source of the word to date is to be found in a Greek-Latin dictionary where the word rebitos is defined as a wanderer, blind or misguided. The genre’s musical base is a synthesis of Greek mainland and island music, Byzantine music, European music, and Ottoman modal scales (makam).
