Today, Armenia recognizes Transfiguration Day.

This day is also synonymous with celebrating Vardavar, or the Festival of Roses. On July 7, Armenians shower each other with water in good faith and decorate temples with roses. Vardavar is one of the most famous Armenian holidays among children and adults of all ages, but beware of the buckets of water that fall from the balconies above! 💦💦

Today, July 5, Armenia celebrates Constitution Day.

On this day, the Constitution of the Independent Republic of Armenia was formally adapted to create a new government framework signifying political progression. After being a member of the Soviet Union for over 70 years, Armenia reestablished its independence in 1991. Then, four years later, on July 5, 1995, the national leadership laid its democratic roots with the constitution.

The Armenian people’s vigilance and dedication to upholding their rights and obligations as citizens will never waver. To learn more about this special occasion and others, download AGBU’s free holidays and traditions app at the link in our bio.

The older scouts traveled to the Kern River, where they braved turbulent waters. Throughout the day, they rafted 8 miles, swam in the river, and leapt from high rocks into the refreshing water.

The camp offered a deep dive into their studio model and design process where participants engaged in hands-on problem-solving, rapid prototyping, and collaboration with NuVuX experts. On Saturday, June 22, 2024, the AGBU AYA Pasadena Scouts and AGBU AYA San Fernando Valley Scouts participated by performing the Flag service and leading the U.S. and Armenian national anthems at the Tekeyan Cultural Association (TCA) Metro Los Angeles Chapter ceremonial blessing of a traditional Armenian khatchkar at the Beshgeturian Center. The event included blessing of the khatchkar by His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church, joined by several clergy members. The khatchkar, a beautifully crafted stone cross, showcases intricate carvings representing Armenian heritage, including Khor Virab, Mount Ararat, angels, pomegranates, birds, and grapevines. It bears the words of Vahan Tekeyan: “The Armenian Church is the birthplace of my soul,” emphasizing the deep spiritual and cultural roots of the Armenian community. This sacred symbol is adorned with traditional abbreviations and the seventh letter of the Armenian alphabet, Է, symbolizing eternity. On behalf of the Pasadena-Glendale and Los Angeles San Fernando Valley Chapter boards and members, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to the TCA Metro Los Angeles Chapter on this auspicious occasion.

The Youth Innovation Day was punctuated by an inspiring TedEd Student Talks event, held in our state-of-the-art performing arts center. Over the course of two months, 15 young innovators prepared through free weekly workshops, honing their skills and ideas. Out of these, 8 participants were selected, and their topics were refined to fit the TED Talk format. Our partnership with TedEd and the TedxYerevan team, led by Kristine Sargsyan, proved to be fruitful, providing an invaluable opportunity for youth to learn how to effectively communicate their innovative ideas.

Special thank you to Kristine Sargsyan for her guidance, carrying most of the weight with passion and commitment to help our youth succeed. We extend our warmest sentiments to AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School students and Innovation Studios alumni, Harout Karadanaian and Kyle Chilingirian who shined on stage. A smashing success at Youth Innovation Day, seamlessly weaving together various elements to empower our young participants.

The Studio Experience workshops, led by accomplished professionals, provided invaluable insights into diverse industries and allowed youth to engage in hands-on projects. In our Architecture workshop, youth created an installation outdoors in the quad area. Founders of DOMM and designers of the AGBU Innovation Studios makerspace, introduced the youth to 21st-century architecture, engaging in Q&A sessions and collaborating on a triangular installation using different materials and trees. Justin Bernard from NuVuX guided participants through makerspace equipment and technology, fostering creativity as they laser-cut and 3D-printed their designs. Skill development workshops were a hit, including Edward Poghosyan’s session offering insights to youth and parents for top university and Ivy League admissions. The Culinary Experience with Chef Ara Zada was a a dynamic interactive workshop where our bright-eyed youth learned how to make dolma.

Expert contributions across various aspects of Youth Innovation Day significantly enriched the event making it one for the books at AGBU Western Region. At the end of this productive day, our young talents graced the big stage with TED Ed Student Talks thanks to the coaching and guidance of Kristine Sargsyan over the past two months.

Stay tuned for more and a photo album from this spectacular event presented by AGBU Innovation Studios and AGBU GenNext.
