Calista Flockhart, Chloë Sevigny, Diane Lane, Demi Moore and Naomi Watts play a group of high-society women befriended and ultimately betrayed by Truman Capote in the new FX period drama “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.”

Ryan Murphy, one of the show’s creators, was entranced by the women Capote referred to as his Swans, self-created creatures whom the writer admired for their style, wealth and savoir faire. Ryan had one thought: “I wanted icons to play icons,” he said in an interview with The New York Times. “Women who were iconic and had some degree of fame and success would understand what it was like to be Swans. I thought they would know the gravity and also the stress of being a star.”

There is some irony, of course, in asking women who have done so much — acted in countless movies and shows, produced others, won tons of awards — to play women who did so little. But the actresses don’t see these characters as frivolous. “They all worked really hard to achieve this kind of status,” Watts said of the women she and her fellow actresses portrayed. “There were sacrifices made.”

“And now, knowing the statistics for what Indigenous women go through and what my community's gone through–I really am not supposed to be here.” Despite the challenges ahead of her in the scope of her work, Woods-Orrison is ready, and she’s enjoying what she has and who she is. “I'm going to…be loud all the time. Even in my work, I'm one of the youngest people, I’m q***r, and I just love to dress as myself. I talked to someone recently, when I was doing fashion interviews at this Native event, and this woman said, “I dress my spirit first.”

“Alaska, the largest US state, is warming at twice the rate of the rest of the country. With shrinking glaciers and melting permafrost, the land is fast eroding and heat-trapping gases are being released, accelerating the warming. Land and marine habits are becoming increasingly inhospitable to the life they’ve long sustained. Wildfires are more common, as are insect infestations. For Evans, capturing the impact of the climate crisis–not least on his community’s way of life–is integral to his work, which centers Indigenous storytelling. “I want to use it as a way to protect and preserve our culture. And then, of course, as we deal with the climate crisis that becomes a point of interest and point of concern.””
