These L.A. foster kids defied the odds when they aged out: 'This isn’t the end of my story' 05/10/2024

“Young people in foster care, they have a lot of services, there are a lot of wonderful programs that provide all this support. But for all of them to work, you really need people to bring their hearts and show up and connect with young people. Because otherwise you get lost."

As we continue to celebrate Foster Care Awareness Month and spotlight our foster youth programs here at PCC, we also want to highlight some of our amazing foster youth students!

In a new documentary, "Possible Selves", premiering tomorrow on PBS SoCal, Alex Ballantyne gives an insider’s perspective on the challenges facing foster youth. We are incredibly of Alex for his vulnerability in sharing his story with the hope that people come away with a better understanding of foster care and the wraparound services these youth need.

All are invited to join us as we host an on-campus documentary screening followed by a Q&A with Alex and producer Shaun Kadlec next week on Thursday, May 16th from 3pm - 5pm in Westerbeck. We hope to !

César Chávez Day is celebrated every year on March 31st, and this year we were extremely honored to reflect on César Chávez’s legacy by inviting Teresa Romero, current president of United Farm Workers, to campus this week!

César Chávez fought tirelessly for social change and his efforts resulted in strengthening protections for farm workers to develop a safer, healthier, more equitable workplace.

His legacy lives on through the United Farm Workers Association, whom Teresa has become president of as well as being the first Latina and immigrant woman to become president of a national union in the United States.

Thank you Teresa for engaging with our community in honor of César Chávez’s memory and the belief he held that “we don’t need perfect political systems, we need perfect participation.”

We would like to remind everyone that campus will be closed TOMORROW, Friday, March 29th, in observance of the holiday. Have a great long weekend !
