More often than not, it’s the simple things that work.
Our front leg muscles (Quads) can be a big contributor to knee, hip and back pain when they are tight.
Here we are using a simple technique of compression while the client engages the stretch of the quads using the opposing muscle group (Hamstrings) aiding in relaxing and lengthening of the quads.

By gently yet firmly touching tissue around the jaw, we are able to find and identify acupressure and trigger points to help unravel muscle fibers, increase localized circulation and aid in relieving pain. TMJ can range from being mild to intense and can be associated with tingling in arms and upper back, locking of the jaw, back pain, difficulty swallowing, ear aches or fullness of the ears, and more. Causes of TMJ issues can range from age, trauma, grinding teeth and some autoimmune diseases. Here we are utilizing pressure points along with active movement enhancers to help reduce tension, retrain out of pain patterns and aid in restoring jaw mobility. Traction is a wonderful technique for calming the nervous system and reducing pain. It is also a great way to aid in restoring and maintaining body alignment and posture. By adding oscillating movements as well as other active movement enhancements & techniques, we are able to help break out of pain patterns, compensation and help proprioception - one’s awareness to self and how they move. Fascia surrounds everything in the body - organs, blood vessels, bones, muscle and nerve fibers- and holds them in place. Fascia helps form the internal structures and is loaded with nerves that when stressed or not used enough can cause tightening. The calf muscles are not only important for our ability to walk, run, and other types of mobility, the calf acts as a “second heart” by pumping and squeezing veins aiding in the return of deoxygenated blood from our feet back towards the chest and heart. When we sit and are not moving, not only does the fascia get restricted, the muscles are not working and can diminish blood flow. Here we are doing gentle passive calf work to help restore mobility and decrease fascial restrictions. The deep hand muscles are often ignored but they are important for opening and closing (flex/ext) the fingers as well as spreading the fingers apart and bringing them together (abd/add). They play an important role in gripping, writing, typing and work together for other fine motor skills like massage, needle point, crotchet, knitting and sewing. I try and incorporate working on the hands as much as possible with clients. It not only feels good, it’s relaxing as well. Cupping is a great way to get to the deeper layers of fascia. And by having the client perform active movement we can help retrain out of pain and compensation patterns. And it truly feels amazing. There are so many good things about doing work along the spine - especially in the Lamina Groove. This is where the deepest layers of the erector-spinal muscles are that are interconnected with the fascia from the head (cranium) to the tail bone region (sacrum). Working here can help restore muscular and fascial balance, mobility up and down the kinetic chain, reduce pain and aid in posture. Tight pecs can contribute to all sorts of things like poor posture, upper back pain, shoulder mobility issues, headaches and even contribute to breathing difficulty. Here we are using guided assisted active range of motion, breath work and myo-fascial release techniques to aid in lessening tightness of the pecs (Maj/Min) and restore better mobility and posture. The scalenes (a group of muscles on the front of our neck) can contribute to decreased neck range of motion and neck pain by compressing the brachial plexus (nerve pathway from the neck to the arms and hands). Here we are doing gentle scalene stretching to help relieve tightness and aid in restoring muscle@balance and posture to the neck. As a manual therapist my hands are the my life line for my career and are often times the heroes of my job. So taking care of my hands is vital for my self care regimen. Basically if I’m not taking care of myself and my hands I am no real service. I don’t know about you, but I love a tummy rub. I remember as a kid when I was sick my mom or my grandma would rub my tummy to help me feel better. as an adult, it still feels good and has many benefits from calming the nervous system, assisting in detox processes, enhancing digestion, reduces bloating and gas, and helps move things along if one has constipation. The abdominal region can hold just as much tension as our shoulders and back when we are under stress and can impact our breathing, posture, activities of daily living and functional mobility. Come feel the difference of Assisted Stretching and Myoskeletal Alignment techniques today. (And maybe get a belly rub too!)
Having good flexibility in the calf muscles has extended benefits for our feet, knees and hip / pelvic alignment, stability and mobility and can play a role in back pain. Stretching the calves can aid in reducing foot conditions like plantar fasciitis, bunions and other ailments associated with poor foot/ankle stability impacting the entire kinetic chain. Necks can take a beating with flexed posture, stress and poor body mechanics with movement. Here we are doing deep, slow stretching with breath work, contract relax and other movement enhancers to restore mobility, alignment and to aid in increased proprioception and pain reduction. This Lumbar, Spinal and Pelvic move not only feels good but is a great way to help level the pelvis and address any pelvic rotation. By adding muscle energy techniques like PNF and breath work, we can help facilitate increased body awareness where there may be restricted fascia contributing to compensation patterns, malalignment and pain which impacts movement, mobility and flexibility. I like incorporating Thai Massage into my manual therapy sessions as it is not only easy on my body, but it’s also a great way to get deep pressure into the tissue and it’s also pain free. Some Thai Massage can be intense, however, how I use Thai Massage is for aiding in relaxation, flexibility, pain relief, improving circulation, providing a sense of calm and connection with my clients. Percussion and Vibration Guns. I don’t use them a lot, however I do like them. For some clients it’s a great way to help them relax and distract them out of their pain cycle. It can aid in reducing stiffness and help increase blood flow for recovery. It can also help prepare tissue for deeper assisted stretching and or deep tissue work and saves my hands. Whatever your take on percussion/vibration guns, if you use them be sure to follow instructions as it can be easy to over do it and cause tissue damage if done incorrectly. Having pain in the biceps can have many different causes: tendonitis, strains, bruises, fractures, to neurological conditions impacting the brachial plexus - causing radiating pain down the arm restricting movement, limiting strength and performance gains and more. Doing this simple pin and stretch technique is a gentle and easy way to release fascial restrictions, increase blood and lymph movement, aid in restoring tissue length and decrease pain. All for the purpose of increasing the rate of healing, recovery and restoring balance to the body. Come feel the difference of Assisted Stretching and Myoskeletal Alignment today!
The muscles of the inner thigh and groin can feel tight when the adductors get overworked or become weak. This can be a result of sitting for long periods with either legs crossed or pulled together; can be a result of weak glutes - specifically glut med that is a major knee and pelvic stabilizer; and other postural deformities and movement compensations resulting from overuse, or improper training, poor recovery programs or generalize weakness due to in activity. This is a sensitive area so good communication for access, pressure and use of breath work are very important. Scapular dysfunction can be a result of many causes - impingement of the thoracic nerve, rounded T-spine from bad posture, over or under training, poor positioning on the rib cage - all of which can lead to winging of the scapula and hinder other shoulder stability, flexibility, strength and function. By incorporating specific movement by the client and getting the fascia around the shoulder where we want it to be, we can help re- educate out of compensating pain patterns and into more accurate sequencing for improved posture and performance that reduce pain.
