Meet Ramesses, an artist whose work is a celebration of life, culture, and history. Starting his career in the pressroom of the L.A. Times, Ramesses moved into the art department, honing his skills in newspaper art for nearly 15 years. His journey began with striking black and white drawings of historical Black figures and evolved into captivating pieces inspired by jazz, blues, and political satire.
Ramesses's artistic evolution didn’t stop there. After noticing a lack of Black representation in church windows, he boldly ventured into stained glass, creating vibrant windows that feature Black figures and jazz-inspired designs. He also creates intricate mosaics that tell powerful stories.
More recently, Ramesses has embraced the art of quilting, especially portrait quilts. After mastering quilting basics at A.A.Q.L.A., he developed unique techniques that blend culture, history, and diverse fabrics. His quilts are not just pieces of art but narratives stitched with purpose and passion.
Known for his thought-provoking and educational art, Ramesses invites viewers to reflect deeply on the world around them. Whether through glass, mosaics, or quilts, each piece embodies the emotions and cultures of his subjects, offering a profoundly personal experience.
