It’s no secret that children learn through repetition, but the actual connections from several run-throughs of a favorite song run deeper than we think. Language development is huge during childhood. Even preteens are still figuring out conversational flow and vocabulary. Young children gain mastery of poetic language, word associations, and syllabic rhythms on top of vocabulary development and sentence structure from a song. This is no simple or obvious feat. As children sing and sing and sing, they start to understand more and more what a song is about and can then use the words within the lyrics properly and fluently. Language learning can be challenging, but when it is paired with a mnemonic approach like music, deeper understanding and memory can be achieved. Research shows that as infants get older, they look more consistently at a speaker’s mouth during both speech and songs. But they looked at the mouth more often during singing compared to speaking only. And as babies watch a caregiver’s mouth movements and listen to the sounds and words they say, they begin to learn how to form these sounds and words themselves. By 12 months infants can spontaneously sing short phrases as they slide around between different pitches, and by 12 to 15 months they may imitate the melodic contour of songs sung to them by their teachers, parents and caregivers. Playing with LEGO is known to have amazing benefits for the development of fine motor skills, developing dexterity and strength in the fingers. The Summer Enrichment kids made LEGO race cars in an exercise that allowed them to experiment, test out and build new ideas. Fun was had by all! Pretend play extends itself to social situations. When Gael, for example, plays with his friend Alyson, they easily enter each other’s worlds. Watching all of our kids take on different pretend roles is amazing to watch and something we’ll never tire of. How we interact with others is key to our lifelong success and happiness.
