Hundreds of Mississippians are jailed for mental illness every year. 5 takeaways from our reporting so far 01/05/2024

We have got to do something different

Hundreds of Mississippians are jailed for mental illness every year. 5 takeaways from our reporting so far It is very uncommon for people going through that process to be held in jail without criminal charges for days or weeks – except in Mississippi. CPAP DEVICES

People who developed health issues after using Philip CPAP and BiPAP sleep apnea machines and ventilators may be eligible to file a lawsuit

DEFECTIVE TIRES

A defective tire can lead to blowouts, tread separation, and other serious and potentially life-threatening problems

FIREFIGHTING FOAM

Firefighting Foam We are investigating personal injury cases where people have been exposed to firefighting foam containing highly toxic PFAS chemicals. The product is Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF), which is linked to cancer and other health risks. Have your case evaluated.

Widespread use of PFAS chemicals has left 99% of the human population with some level of PFAS in their bloodstream. Even small amounts of PFAS in the body can have serious health implications, including liver damage, cancer, low birth weight and decreased fertility amongst ng other risks.

PFAS-containing firefighting foam, or AFFF, is highly effective in fighting the most dangerous and difficult fires, such as those caused by liquid fuels – jet fuel, gas tanks, oil tankers, and offshore platforms, to name a few. Yet, after being used to put out fires, the toxic foam seeps into the ground, tainting the water used by surrounding communities and cities for drinking water.
To make the water safe for people to drink, cities and municipalities with high levels of PFAS chemicals must use a different and more costly way of filtering the water than most local water treatment facilities. Many communities affected by PFAS contamination cannot afford these upgrades. It would be unfair to pass those costs on to consumers instead of companies profiting billions of dollars from manufacturing PFAS.

TALCUM POWDER

Use of talcum powder for feminine hygiene has been linked to ovarian cancer. As many as 2,200 cases are diagnosed each year

HAIR RELAXERS

We are HAVING lawsuits REVIEWED on behalf of women who regularly used hair relaxers and developed uterine cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, or breast cancer after years of using hair relaxers.

KRATOM

What is Kratom?
Kratom, or Mitragyna speciosa, is an herbal leaf from tropical trees in Southeast Asia. According to the Food and Drug Administration, Kratom is commonly used to self-treat pain, coughing, diarrhea, anxiety and depression, opioid use disorder and opioid withdrawal.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration estimates 1.7 million Americans aged 12 and older used Kratom in 2021.

Side effects of Kratom use
In some cases, clinicians reported seeing patients with a wide range of serious adverse effects including seizures, psychiatric, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and respiratory problems and even death.

Mississippi jailed more than 800 people awaiting psychiatric treatment in a year. Just one jail meets state standards. Counties are allowed to hold people awaiting court-ordered psychiatric treatment in jails only if the facilities meet safety and health standards, but there’s no funding to help them comply and no penalties if they don’t.

I have had a influx of construction cases lately. It is amazing how many unlicensed contractors there are building homes, remodeling homes etc., Please check on licenses, you can do that at the Mississippi Board of Contractors website. Below is the lastest list of disciplinary procedures. If you are a supplier to contractors you really should check their license, if you do business with an unlicensed contractor and provided lumber, brick etc to a construction site you cannot put a lien on that property if you are not paid. The law now specifically gives you the right to requests a copy of their license and they must provide it.

THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS HAVE BEEN LINKED TO EXPOSURE TO AFFF OR PFAS EXPOSURE, IF YOU OR ANYONE YOU KNOW HAS BEEN EXPOSED AND SUFFERED ONE OF THESE ILLNESSES HAVE THEM CALL, THE CALL COSTS NOTHING AND YOU WILL NOT PAY ANY LEGAL FEES OR EXPENSES UNLESS THERE IS A RECOVERY ON YOUR BEHALF. IF YOU USE THESE PRODUCTS NOW, SEE BELOW FOR RECOMMENDATIONS ON HOW TO AVOID OR REDUCE YOUR EXPOSURE.

This foam was used in public and in industrial settings to fight fires. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large family of man-made chemical compounds found in a wide range of consumer products such as nonstick products, polishes, waxes, paints and cleaning products. Two PFAS compounds, perfluorooctane acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), may be present in firefighting aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) solutions.

We are investigating the following injuries that have been linked to AFFF or PFAS exposure:

Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Bladder Cancer
Breast Cancer
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia
Colon Cancer
Kidney Cancer
Leukemia
Liver Cancer
Lymphoma
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Pancreatic Cancer
Prostate Cancer
Testicular Cancer
Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid Disease
Ulcerative Colitis

Any exposure to firefighting foam, wearing firefighting turn out gear, or drinking PFAS polluted water can be enough to cause these injuries. We are happy to answer any of your questions or discuss other injuries that could be caused by AFFF or PFAS exposure.

While almost everyone has PFAS in their blood through exposure to water, dust and everyday products that contain the chemicals, firefighters may have greater contact with PFAS than any other group of workers. In addition to using — and often getting doused with — AFFF, it has become clear in recent years that the clothing that was supposed to protect them while fighting fires, known as turnout gear, is also saturated with PFAS.

Protection against exposure
PFAS/PFOA/PFOS may be orally ingested, absorbed through the skin or inhaled through exposure in the atmosphere. Personnel at departments that use firefighting AFFFs with PFAS/PFOA/PFOS should practice the following controls to stay safe from exposure:

1. Replace older AFFF stocks with fluorine-free foam solutions.
2. Contain and manage AFFF and water runoff.
3. Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) whenever handling AFFF.
4. Properly remove and bag contaminated PPE prior to transporting.
5. Use cleaning wipes on your face, neck and hands immediately after exposure.
6. Clean contaminated PPE and SCBA before its next use.
7. Shower within one hour of returning to the station or home.

PFAS
PFAS are special chemicals that can be found in certain things, like firefighting foam. Firefighting foam is a special kind of foam that firefighters use to put out big fires, especially ones that involve oil or fuel. It's really good at stopping fires because it can quickly cover the flames and smother them.

Now, the problem with firefighting foam is that it contains PFAS. PFAS are chemicals that can be harmful to our health and the environment. When firefighters use the foam, it can get into the soil, water, and even our drinking water sources. This can be a problem because PFAS can stay in the environment for a long time and build up over time.

When people or animals drink water that has PFAS in it, it can affect their bodies. It can make them sick or cause other health problems. Scientists are still studying PFAS to understand exactly how they can impact our health, but it's better to be safe and avoid them if possible.

To keep people safe, scientists and firefighters are working on finding safer alternatives to firefighting foam that don't contain PFAS. They are also trying to clean up areas that have been affected by PFAS contamination.

So, in summary, PFAS are special chemicals that can be found in firefighting foam. Firefighting foam is used to put out big fires, but it can also be harmful to our health and the environment because it contains PFAS. Scientists and firefighters are working to find safer alternatives to the foam to protect people and the environment.
