We’ve been hearing a lot of talk around DV and It Ends with Us. It’s an important convo to have AND we believe it’s helpful to have it in a safe & supportive environment. Join us for this open discussion around DV, how it impacts us, and how to support each other and ourselves when it comes up. These convos will take place in the evening, final time dependent on availability of participants. To be clear: this is not a therapy group. Just a space to facilitate productive conversations around this topic!

Many of us find it easy to treat others with kindness and compassion but are faced with a wall when it comes to how we treat ourselves. Sometimes it can be helpful to take a step back and look at your situation through someone else’s eyes. What would you say to a friend going through the same thing? How would you react if a family member shared the same feelings you’re having? Once you replace that family member or friend in mind with yourself, you have engaged in self-compassion. Remember, you are just as deserving of your love and support as those around you.

“My everyday self care includes watching TV and reading. I try to read for enjoyment instead of for school at least 30 minutes each night before bed. The series I am currently working on is the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. I also try to focus on my everyday stressors to increase my awareness of burnout. I plan a few vacations — usually cruises — throughout the year so that I always have something to look forward to. These trips allow me to take a break and recharge, empowering me to be my best self for my clients.” ~Patrick

“My favorite forms of self-care all involve immersing myself in nature. I love going on long hikes and settling by the water to read or write. I also enjoy experimenting with nature photography while I am out on my hikes, snapping photos of unique flowers and trees. When I can’t get outside, I am often curled up with my cats, Lily and Simon, or trying my hand at new recipes.” ~Naseem

Sunday morning thoughts 💭 ••••• Restriction isn’t always the answer to something you want to change or stop doing. I’d argue that it’s usually not, but I’m sure someone will come up with something I’m not thinking of. This came up when thinking about my own restrictive thoughts, particularly around food. We are “fed” the idea that if we eat less, it’ll fix our problems, help us lose weight, etc. Which not only isn’t necessarily true, it can also be very harmful. Not eating is not a good fix for trying to change your eating habits. Not spending any money isn’t the fix to changing your spending habits. Not drinking is not the fix to changing your alcohol drinking habits. Temporarily? Sure, maybe it will help. But long term? No. It’s not sustainable. You have to eat to live. You have to spend money on food, housing etc. And while you don’t have to drink alcohol, you do have to drink water to live 😏 Life isn’t always black or white. A lot of times there’s a middle ground. Eating greens is important & so is going to a birthday party for your friend & having a piece of chocolate cake. Saving money for a big trip is important, and so is spending money on a big trip. If we restrict something, it usually comes back in full force. But if we listen to our bodies, emotions, minds, we just might find that happy balance that we need. And change whatever habit we want to change, like learning how to save & spend money responsibly. There also may be something happening on a deeper level that may heed tending to that is driving some of these behaviors ❤️

Last but not least… we have two quotes to finish out this “Our Favorite Quotes” series. Our founder & director, Angelique, specializes in trauma & anxiety, and thought these quotes highlight her approach to therapy. She shared “I tell my clients both of these things all the time: we have to work through our anxiety and/or trauma to heal, we can’t just go around it. It only gets worse if we try to avoid it. And second, feelings are temporary. They come and go. Sometimes, we feel more anxious b/c we are trying to fight our emotions. However, while it is easier said than done sometimes, it is most helpful for us to feel them & let them go when it’s time to welcome another feeling. When we are healing from trauma, fear comes up often, but that doesn’t mean there is actual danger. It is important to distinguish between the two.”
•••

We aren’t done yet! Our team chose this quote because we all believe it to be true. even when it’s hard.

Our founder & director, Angelique, shared: “Self-care is vital in all seasons of life, even if it looks different in different seasons. Throughout my own healing journey, self-care played a huge role in how I took my power back. I had to pay attention to my own needs & say ‘yes’ to myself, which is a huge way I’ve leaned into my own ‘power.’ 💕 And it hasn’t always been easy. Not to mental, strength training is one of my faves & has literally helped me gain physical and mental power & strength.”

One of our therapists, Patrick, shared: “For me, this is how I view life itself, and this also explains a little of how I view therapy as well. I think that using the creative part of our brains can be helpful in many non-creative activities. I also think that with all the science and knowledge we have as humans, art and the creative process is still vital.”
