Here is what I DON’T like about the new 4Runner (and other current Toyota SUVs)

The main thing I don’t like is the engine options. It’s my understanding that they’re only giving you two options. A 2.4 L turbo or an electric/hybrid option.

If someone’s only planning to keep it for 5-6 years, then probably either of those options are fine. That being said, I would probably stay away from the hybrid. Toyota’s hybrid technology has not traditionally been very good. They may have improved their technology, but the older Highlander hybrids were junk. The batteries give out and the motor dies somewhere around 7–10 years.

My issue with the 2.4 L turbo is two things. First that turbo is going to wear out somewhere around 175,000 miles, so if you keep vehicles long-term like I do, you’re going to need to plan to rebuild or replace that turbo at some point.

My second issue is, I’m sure it’s pretty gutless. The specs say it has a little bit more horsepower and torque than the previous V6 but I’m sure the new 4Runner is also heavier, so it is probably a wash and 4Runners are known for being pretty weak in the power category.

Like I said, if you’re only planning to keep it for 5 or 6 years then it will probably be a great vehicle but I think the days of Toyotas lasting 300,00 – 400,000 miles are probably over. You never know though, if there is anyone out there who can figure out how to make a turbo charged engine last 400,000 miles. It would be Toyota… The verdict is still out.

Several people have asked my opinion on the new 4Runner... so here is what I like about it…

I like the way they look and I love a lot of the new features!

- Limited slip differential on rear-drive models
- Hill descent control
- Off-road electronic throttle and brake control
- Electronically locking rear differential
- Disconnecting stabilizer bars

These are great upgrades that make the 4Runner much more off-road capable and will certainly be praised by the overlanding and 4x4 comminutes.

It is a good thing it lasted 22 years and 270k miles. I don't want to do this again for another 22 years! It has been faithful until two days ago... I'd say that's a job well done Toyota!!!
