It’s time we all stood together and worked towards saving the lives of animals and making sure organizations are held accountable. We should all have one similar goal: the welfare of the animals ❤️

Are you content with the inconsistent trend observed over the last two decades, marked by over ten years of missing data and incomplete reporting of mortality figures?

HHS initially aimed to operate as a no-kill facility in 1956 but decided to abandon this mission in 1980. Despite not revealing any specific metrics regarding their life-saving initiatives, HHS, as depicted in their annual reports, was perceived as highly successful and was associated with various local socialites and TV personalities. With its growing reputation for compassion, HHS witnessed significant increases in funding. Furthermore, it opted to reduce intake by more than 70% with more donations and grant money in the bank!

This alarming statistic points out a troubling trend in performance that reflects the organization’s mission. Does it possess a resolute commitment to saving lives, or is it merely coasting along? Moreover, it brings up important concerns for a non-profit organization that depends on the kindness of empathetic donors.

It is crucial for HHS to maintain a consistent track record to uphold the caring image it strives to convey to Houston residents, especially donors and grantors. While the organization has a history of receiving unwavering trust and support from stakeholders, transparency is key. Would donors feel at ease knowing their contributions are used to destroy lost and abandoned animals?

Additionally, individuals should feel confident that their contributions truly benefit the greater good. It is essential to assess whether it is fair to stakeholders if their efforts are not being harnessed to rescue animals in need. An animal welfare organization that is truly humane must acknowledge its responsibility in seeking solutions without treating animals as mere inventory like property that can be destroyed.

We support Manvel /On the Rise for Paws 👍🏻👍🏻
We hope you show your support to those amazing volunteers and advocates as they fight for the lives of animals. ❤️

Here's a brief summary of Feb 5th City Council Meeting discussion among the officials and the representative from Houston Humane Society (HHS):

1️⃣ The discussions and concerns revolve around approximately 102 cats and dogs annually.

2️⃣ Numerous Council Members have publicly voiced their affection for animals, with some actively participating in rescues to remove animals from the streets, as observed by animal advocates and the public. 👍

3️⃣ With officials expressing significant compassion, advocates anticipated a resolute commitment from both officials and staff to denounce the act of euthanizing healthy animals. For many Americans, euthanizing healthy, treatable, and manageable animals is deemed an unacceptable course of action.

5️⃣ During the Houston Humane Society presentation given by one of their dog behavior employees, we learned the 6 reasons why HHS put animals down.
•feral tendency
•dog aggression
•cat aggression
•resource guarding
•humane aggression
•multi diagnoses of the above-mentioned conditions.
👎 We agreed on human agression when it's unprovoked. However, according to HHS regulations, numerous dogs could potentially be considered candidates for euthanasia. While, canine and feline behavioral science has made significant strides in recent decades, becoming a widespread practice across the nation, it's perplexing that HHS continues to penalize dogs for exhibiting natural behavior.
📍Rehabilitating large dog breeds with behavioral issues constitutes a program with significant costs. Given the ample resources at the disposal of HHS, there is an expectation for a more inclusive and knowledgeable approach towards understanding animal behavior and working with them.

5️⃣ Despite numerous residents offering assistance to the MPD and the ACO in developing a local lifesaving program, it appears that officials did not explore the abundant resources available during the discussion that lasted over 90 minutes. Several officials showed great interests to position HHS as a leading choice, seemingly not knowing or overlooking the historical mission's inconsistency, as highlighted by data.

6️⃣ Comparing the Houston Humane Society to the Alvin Adoption Center yields an unfair and inaccurate assessment. The Houston Humane Society, being a well-funded private shelter, boasts assets valued at $27 million and has received close to $6 million in donations to care for approximately 3300 animals as of 2022. In contrast, the Alvin Adoption Center operates as a public shelter with limited resources. Public shelters are primarily tasked with housing animals, providing essential medical care, and diligently working to rehome animals responsibly and swiftly. It's crucial to acknowledge that private and public shelters adhere to distinct operational models and have disparate budgetary allocations, rendering comparisons for decision-making purposes inappropriate.
✅ The data from both the current HHS and the Houston Mayor's Task Force present intriguing insights. HHS, originally aspiring to function as a no-kill facility, received 14,078 animals in 2004. However, in 2022, the intake plummeted to 3,304 animals after the abandonment of the no-kill philosophy in 1980. History
✅ During the 90-minute discussion between the officials and the HHS employee, specific percentages regarding adoption rates, animals put down, and those returned to their owners were neither disclosed by the HHS employee nor inquired about by the officials.

7️⃣ Policies, procedures, and solutions are typically crafted to tackle commonplace situations and not necessarily cater to the exceptional and extreme ones. While it's critical to recognize that distinctive circumstances outside the purview of standard practices, specific discussions are necessary but shouldn’t be used as a benchmark for policy formation to guide day to day decision making process. That said, we have several reminders for all officials and stakeholders.
E.g. Giving examples of Animal Control randomly taking 10 dogs all at once while intake is projected to be 100 over 365 days is not based on commonplace.

8️⃣ It appears that several Manvel officials require training on effective and compassionate sheltering practices and practical solutions to utilize their empathy in aiding the animals in Manvel.
✅ Definitions such as “kill” vs. “euthanize” and “aggressive” dogs need to be properly explained.
✅ There is a big difference between the two words “kill” and “euthanize. No kill supports humane euthanasia of animals that are irremediably suffering but not the killing of healthy, treatable, manageable animals. It is crucial to distinguish between the terms "kill" and "euthanize.
Again, no kill advocates support the compassionate euthanasia of animals that are incurably suffering, without resorting to the euthanasia of healthy, treatable animals.
✅ Not all reactive dogs are truly aggressive dogs.

🎯🎯Our ultimate advice, animal lovers and officials who are passionate animal lovers should adopt virtues like empathy, and outside the box thinking to connect with advocates. Animal advocates aim to improve the system for animals and promote a harmonious co-existence between animals and humans through innovative solutions.

Thank you for visiting our page! We have more information to share. We look forward to your return as we continue to work together for animal advocacy.

Mice are not monsters, they are not dangerous I When you find them, just put them in a cage with some cheese and set them free again 🌾 Contrary to popular belief, they are not dirty animals at all, they are rather very clean, they are also very smart and very sociable. When a human finds his den, the mouse understands that it is time to find another shelter 🏡 They are also full of wisdom There is no need to kill them, let them live ✨❤️ They only live one year 🐾🎗️ Quando🕊️ (Christophe Gallett)

This sweet baby needs a forever home

Less than 24 hours later Martin has found himself back in our shelter by no fault of his own. This is the 3rd time for him to leave the shelter (but not our hearts) and end up back with us. We aren’t sure if it’s his extra toe, FIV status, or his love of conversing with you. Martin has been a staff and volunteer favorite for the duration of his stays with us. He loves potatoes and balloons and is friendly with other cats even. We know you will love him as much as we do and he has all the love to give as well. Let’s show this sweet boy that he is wanted and find him a home he can finally call his own furever!!!

Starving puppy found in Pearland needs a home.
This is a courtesy post for a resident who found this puppy looking for food on the side of the road. She couldn’t bare to just leave it to starve or worse.. get hit and killed by a car.
She already has a bunch of dogs and cannot keep this baby so if you or someone you know is looking to add a sweet puppy to your family, please let us know! We really don’t want to see it end up at a shelter where it may be killed.

Yesterday morning I was driving home and saw this guy running back and forth across a busy road here in Pearland going to all the trash looking for something to eat... He's maybe 2-3 months old and skinny ... I hadn't eaten my lunch of pulled pork the night before so I dumped it on the side of the road for him ... he ate it like he hadn't eaten in a week ... I felt horrible fpr him but I have MANY dogs already ... but he followed me back to my car cried whimpered and put his paws inside my car ... even though he stunk like a landfill I picked him up and took him home. He is very smart, extremely sweet and very loving. He gets along with all my dogs but I just cannot have another ... if ANY OF YOU wants or knows someone who wants him ... please let me know asap ... because I really don't want to take him to the animal shelter... but I am going to have to this week ... (the GSD he is lying next to is small ... shes not quite 6 months old yet) Thank God ... there is a lot of interest ... if you want him plz PM me

Anyone missing a cat in Pearland?

12/02/2023

Please spay and neuter your pets.

Within a 50 mile radius of Houston, there are 7,635 adoptable cats and dogs listed on 24PetConnect. That's the website that area shelters plus many rescues use to find homes for pets.

It's clear that Houston doesn't need any more cats & dogs. If we ever want to find a solution, it's going to come from spay & neuter programs like this.
