Ever thought your curls have lost their mind?

Why do some sections of your curls look much longer than others, even though every hair on your head typically grows at the same speed. Why do some curls simply show more length?

It’s all based on your spring factor. Looser curls are going to show length much quicker than tighter curls. This is because the tighter Curls are too busy, spinning in a circle while looser curl are basically humming along on an even path all the way down.

So, what’s a girl to do?

Getting a dry cut will enable your stylist to see all the different spring factors in your curls and know how much to take off of each one. For instance, you might end up needing more length taken off of the looser curl patterns and only a dusting on the tighter curls, so that everybody is visually even.

I see you stopped using your clips that you bought many years ago because you couldn’t figure them out. I see you.

One of the biggest things you can do to improve results is to use your hand mirror. You know, the one you haven’t dug out from the back of the cabinet in about five years, yeah that one 🤪

Technique won’t matter if you’re not taking a moment to check and see what’s really going on

If y’all don’t have a hand mirror, girl, go get one!

Struggling with trying to keep those curls on point and make it through a season of life?

I have been there too!

We wear so many hats and when a season of life hits us we feel like we need to keep all of our balls juggling in the air. Everything looking perfect but on the inside, we’re feeling crazy like a hurricane.

Well I’m here to tell you that it’s OK

I give you permission 🤗.

Wether you’re getting through school, raising precious babies
or maybe even caring for elderly parents.

Whatever it may be, stop stressing about your curls.

Friend, it’s going to be ok.

Struggling with having enough time to properly style your curls?

Try this time saver

🌿Shower at night applying your cleanser and slap your conditioner in any ol way. Rinse. Go on about your nightly chores, ie..making coffee, brush teeth, prepare lunches etc., reset your house for the next day.

Go to bed.

🌿Next morning, place your conditioner, and all your styling products onto the floor of your tub. While leaning over the tub side, apply your conditioner according to the instructions provided to you by your curl specialist. Follow up with applying your styling products all while leaning over the tub.

🌱Showering and cleansing the night before and then doing your conditioning and styling routine the following morning will save time and your curls because you’ll be able to focus on committing to your curls for the week.

3️⃣ tips for volume on finely textured loose curls, plus a BONUS tip! ⤵️

Yes, your haircut can have a lot to do with whether or not you’re able to achieve volume.

But, a large part of achieving volume is a direct result of YOUR styling techniques, product application, and choice of products.

🌿First, even finely textured loose curls need lots of water. It’s all about how much drips off of your hair. My rule for determining just how much water is needed for loose and finer textured curls is right before applying your stylers, give your curls a squeeze. You want a little water to come out of the hair. 3 or 4 drops. If water pours out then your curls might be too wet which can make them super defined but it’ll look like you’ve got about 4curls on your entire head…and flat.

🌿Second, using products that will help boost lift at the scalp and aid in curl clumping are a must-have. Typically foams are a good choice here, but they’re not always “woman enough” to capture that curl pattern, elevate that curl pattern, and then keep it there for days. So it’s important to always use some sort of a gel over top of your foam styler.

🌿Third, making sure to apply your stylers on the hair closest to the scalp will help your delicate curls to elevate from the scalp. Now, that’s not to say that we want to slop all kinds of product on this hair towards the scalp. No, we just want a thin veiling of product here.

🌿BONUS, let’s not forget diffusing. If you’re only willing to air dry or hood dry your curls, you’re not going to achieve the volume you’re looking for. Period.

Volume is only going to happen if you’re using a diffuser to help encourage more spring in the curl, dry the curls quickly, and let that spring factor bounce into affect.

Can you relate?

You’re trying really hard to grow out your length but the back center section of your hair is crazy tighter than the rest of your curls! That’s what this sweet girl has going on.

🌿What to do?

In an effort to maintain as much length as possible for her, we opted to cut the back sides even with the center.

Our end result is a little bit triangular but at least it’s even. Shaping the back into more of a U shape would have required us to remove way more length on the sides and back sides than she was comfortable with

Wouldn’t it be great if you could create your idea of beautiful curls!

What does that look like for you? Guess what, it’s going to look different for everyone!

Are you willing to practice new routines in order to achieve it? Because that’s what it’s going to take if you want different results.

Want to know the process? It’s a simple one. You’ve got to do one of three things…change your haircut, change your products and/or change your application of those products.

Quite often it’s necessary to change more than one!

Are you in????

Everybody is talking about the Superbowl!

Are you planning on watching?

If so, I wonder how many times they’ll show Taylor 😃

If not, tell me you’re doing something fun 🤩

We’ll have it on but we’re in it for the commercials and Reba singing the national anthem 🇺🇸

It’s my hydration hair mask day so I’ll be doing that….and cleaning. Exciting, I know 😆

How to know when it’s time for a haircut and how to schedule your next curl session.

🌿 If your detangling process has become an absolute chore due to snarly ends

🌿 Maybe it’s taking longer for your hair to dry

🌿 Possibly you’re finding that your having to use a lot more product

🌿 Or, you simply like to keep your shape fresh and it’s been about 3 - 4 months since your last visit.

🌻If any of those apply, then let’s go over how to schedule your next curl session!

Online scheduling remains open to book at any time throughout the current month.

If you're unable to find an opening, please check back
on the 1st of each month at 8 am when the following month's schedule will be released.

Example, January 2nd the schedule for February opens.

Setting a personal reminder for 8am on the 1st is recommended if you desire a specific month.

Ever get caught up in the comparison trap and find yourself striving for absolute perfection in your curls?

We can thank social media for that. I mean it’s really nothing but a highlight reel.

Realizing this, you’ll find true happiness in your own curl journey. Instead of punishing yourself for not having the perfect curls like you see online, focus on loving your curls where they’re at.

Here’s to embracing our curl journeys and celebrating the frizz, fracture, perfect definition, volume, poofiness, halos and everything in between

Who’s with me 😃

01/01/2024

Well ladies here we are! 2024!! Hope y’all had a safe and happy New Year’s Eve!

Do y’all have any special traditions for New Year’s Day?

We’ll be having a smoked ham, black eyed peas and Spinach salad with a homemade tangy sesame seed dressing😋

Is there a particular food that you and your family absolutely must have to set your year off on the right foot?

12/30/2023

Ever make a New Year’s resolution that you didn’t keep?

Me too!!!!

Looking ahead with 2024 coming right around the corner I thought I’d share something that has worked waaaaaay better for me than resolutions.

I choose one word. A word that helps to keep me focused on what I’m working on for that year. Think I’ve done this for about 8 years. Whether it’s things I want to work on personally or professionally. Some years I stay on track better than others.

My word for 2024 is going to be nurture🌱

I will literally write my one word on slips of paper and place them in random places for me to find throughout the year just in case I forget and lose track.

Anybody else want to try this with me??

Ready for a change but unsure what length to cut your hair to?

Try cutting one side first and keep cutting it until you get it into a length that you’re both happy with.

We had sooo much fun changing up her look!

Photos from Laura Mcgraw Hair Studio's post 12/04/2023

Are your curls trying to tell you something?

Typically your curls telltale signs that they’re ready for a trim is that the ends get a little snarly (hey, that’s a word isn’t it 🤔) and the fairy knots start to form which complicates your detangling and styling. When we have difficulty detangling, what are you most likely to do? Yep, you know it, we rip through our hair with our fingers or combs, we’re not as patient and that just leads to split ends, which is a whole nother subject!

12/01/2023

Hey curlfriends!

Scheduling for January 2024 is now open 😃

Yes that’s right, 2024 is about to be right on top of us! Can you believe it??
