Reading about Silk Soy switching labels on their products from organic to natural. Or adding non-GMO labels to make consumers feel safer. If they are nonGMO that doesnt mean they dont spray their soy crops with pesticides. The soy industry specifically has a high rate of pesticide use in commercial crops. Be careful about the word "natural", "natural flavors" could be the a**l secretions of a beaver. Lol, just a tidbit for today.

When making coffee scrubs, don't go cheap. Always make sure you use organic as coffee tends to have loads of pesticides. Time to make some coffee body scrub! This brand is at HEB for 5.88 for 12oz.

Okay, so my house still isn't back to normal to make products but I promised I would share a recipe. For the last several months I have been making my own facial moisturizer and it's super easy. Take a very small bottle, like 1oz, fill it 3/4 with rosehip oil purchased from mountain rose herb and add 5-6 drops of rose geranium essential oil, from edens garden essential oils (both have websites). Get another spray bottle filled with distilled water. After showering, on damp skin, spray 2-3 pumps into your hand of the oil and 2 sprays of the distilled water, rub your palms together and distribute evenly on your face. I have combination oily skin. It soaks up well, smells like rose and leaves my face soft. Haven't had any issues with acne or excessive oil. Enjoy!

So what exactly is on your natural, organic bathshelf? If you hear the term all natural, organic, botanical you may be in for a surprise exactly what is in your products. There is a USDA Organic seal of approval for skin care/cosmetics but while there is an approval process there is no oversight over products falsely claiming to be organic. Here is an instance: your shampoo contains organic argan oil and organic lavender essential oil, but it also contains toxic chemicals or agents such as Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS/SLES) which can be contaminated with 1,4 dioxane, a carcinogenic byproduct. SLS is very common in shampoos and can even be in your “all natural” shampoo. Because it contains natural or organic ingredients, the possible cancer contaminated shampoo still reads as natural on the store shelves. Read the labels, just because it claims to be organic, natural or botanical, may not really mean that the entire product is organic or natural. At IllyBee we only use raw/unrefined butters, unrefined/cold pressed oils and are careful to avoid products that are extracted with the use of solvents. We also avoid using synthetic fragrances. What’s in your deodorant? If you use deodorant/antiperspirant, you are using some form of aluminum. It is really hard to decipher from all the scare tactics out there, “it’s linked to breast cancer; it’s linked to Alzheimer’s” etc. What I do not want this page to do is pass on false information so that you can use our all natural products. BUT I WANT YOU TO CONSIDER—National Cancer Institute’s statements on deodorant and cancer, “Some research suggests that aluminum-based compounds, which are applied frequently and left on the skin near the breast, may be absorbed by the skin and cause estrogen-like (hormonal) effects (3). Because estrogen has the ability to promote the growth of breast cancer cells, some scientists have suggested that the aluminum-based compounds in antiperspirants may contribute to the development of breast cancer (3). Because studies of antiperspirants and deodorants and breast cancer have provided conflicting results, additional research is needed to investigate this relationship and other factors that may be involved. East, West or Refined? When it comes to Shea Butter there are various forms of it. The raw form of West African Shea butter has a distinct nutty aroma, feels similar to hard butter, it can be light gray to yellowish in color. While it is best in raw form, the unique smell is not pleasant to every nose. Whereas, its more expensive sister - East African Shea butter is much softer, yellow in texture, the smell is light and its lower melting point allows for better skin absorption. Then the no- no - Refined Shea butter. This butter is chemically bleached or filtered to make it whiter in color. It may have a preservative added to it to prevent it from going rancid as the Vitamin E content has been lowered or removed. Many commercial products people use do not distinguish between raw and refined so many don't know that they are not getting the full benefit. What is the point of Shea butter if it doesn’t have the vitamins and that is the sole purpose of why you are using it? IllyBee Naturals incorporates healing raw East and West Shea butters into our products and is why, we never use refined butters.

Do you know the difference between a humectant and an emollient? A humectant draws water to your skin's surface, it bonds with water molecules (in skin & air) to increase the water content in skin. Glycerin & honey are popular humectants but glycerin can be sticky in higher concentrations. Emollients smooth the rough, flaky skin and provide a barrier to water loss. Toxins- In your food AND cosmetics. According to the Center for Science in the Public Health Interest: "The three most widely used dyes, Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6, are contaminated with known carcinogens … (carcinogens cause cancer). Another dye, Red 3, has been acknowledged for years by the Food and Drug Administration to be a carcinogen, yet is still in the food supply." Not only is it in your food but Red 40, Yellow 5 and 6 are widely used in cosmetics (Dr. Mercola). While you may love that synthetic orange mango butter from the large retailer, its not the best thing for your skin. And what is our motto? If your skin absorbs 60% of products, why not use 100% natural?

Did you know: Petrolatum [EWG score 4] is mineral oil jelly i.e. petroleum jelly and is used as a barrier to lock moisture in the skin. It is a carcinogen and linked to organ system toxicity? You will find this as an ingredient in many butt paste/diaper rash creams. But not in ours, we use only organic butters & oils in our butt balm.
