Our BACK TO SCHOOL FOOD DRIVE is on! Along with our amazing sponsors, we are starting our year feeding 1,250 public school students, at 41 school sites, spanning 3 school systems. You can drop off an item, host a food drive, or make a donation, everything helps to provide great care to our students.

Way to go kids! We had our first Junior League of Birmingham packing party of Shool Year 2024-25 and had the most children of Leaguers show up ever! A big thank you to Junior League of Birmingham for their 14th year of funding, helping feed public school students that are at-risk for food insecurity.

Our fabulous mentoring team, Youth Services Director Shanique Kenion, Mentoring Assistant Chyna Patterson, & Program Assistant Tate Williams took our youth into a breakout room where they developed valuable real-world skills, including team building, critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving. By utilizing the skills mentioned above, we were able to work together effectively and successfully escape the room.

At VFS, children are at the heart of all we do! 🥰 We were honored to be a small part of supporting the needs of children with incarcerated mothers & grandmothers. Hygiene, school supplies, & food bags were provided for them as they get ready to go back to school. This special event called Me & Mommy Day allows one day for children to spend with their mothers or grandmothers and celebrate together the important days they often miss.🥲 Special thanks as always to Chaplain Dorothy Pressley for her continued leadership in this area and for her partnership with VFS through the many years.

This past year, our Moms' Support Group Team served 130 women, at 4 different sites within the correctional, rehab, & public arenas. We are thankful to Alabama Department of Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention for their continued funding for parent support groups! Thank you to our facilitators for all their hard work and love they brought this past year!

This month's Wise Advisor mixer, we focused on building teamwork skills among our youth. They learned the value of collaboration and working together to achieve common goals.
As they worked together, they developed their problem-solving abilities, improving their communication skills, and fostering mutual respect. It's amazing to see them learn the importance of teamwork and collaboration!
Fatherhood & Youth Facilitator Jerry McClain graduated 6 young men at The Department of Alabama Youth Services in month. Utilizing the Why Try! curriculum, youth are taught important life skills needed for a successful future. He does an amazing job for the VFS team! Family Services Director Derick Williams attended the graduation as well.

VFS' latest initiative, Project Abraham, enhances the support and training of local pastors and parents in creatively deepening their children's faith. The first 12-week cycle culminated in a celebratory event attended by several participating pastors. We are grateful for the unity within our faith community. 🌞We're so grateful for the support from our community! 😊 This morning, we held a Back to School Drop-Off Drive to help us prepare for an exciting but busy upcoming school year. We have over 1,200 public students at 41 schools across three systems. Your generosity has made a huge impact on their education and well-being. Keep it coming! Mentoring Matters! Through teamwork and collaboration, we spent the day canoeing and exploring the Cahaba River, learning the importance of clean, quality water, and how to sustain our rivers/water sources, while also identifying the fish species in this beautiful body of water. Our Wise Advisors' monthly mixers provide our youth meaningful and engaging activities that provide education, support, and skill building. Big thanks to Cahaba River Society for their support and education they provide to so many!

BackPack Buddies
In Shelby County alone, there are over 10,000 public school children on the free meal program at their school but what happens over the weekends? During long holiday breaks and weekends, The BackPack Buddies Program helps meet the need by providing public school students with nutritious and easy-to-prepare food that they can take home when other resources aren’t always available. We also provide Family Emergency Food Boxes, Hygiene Bags, and many other important essentials.
BackPack Programs are facilitated all over the United States and we are so thankful to offer our own customized backpack program to the children of Shelby County. This is only possible due to the generous and caring sponsors, donors, and grantors that have selflessly invested money, time, and hard work to insure that every child has a chance to thrive and have a great future.
