What happens when you have a lazy flight instructor.

A private pilot applicant (non-US citizen) was 15 mins into his oral exam and things were going terribly. The applicant was struggling to find the words to answer the Examiner’s questions. Long periods of silence elapsed while he attempted to explain the reasoning behind his answers. Several times he stated “I can answer the question in Spanish—not in English”. He explained that his instructor spoke Spanish in many of his ground school sessions and flight lessons.

The FAA, and the rest of the world demands that a pilot be proficient in the English language to understand instructions and communicate intentions in a clear and concise manner. The FAA states that a checkride must be conducted in the English language. The need to EXPLAIN is more important than just a rote answer.

Flight instructors can teach small segments of ground school in the student’s native language to assist in translating English words and terms to facilitate learning. Unfortunately there is a contingent of CFI’s who take the path of least resistance and teach mostly in the foreign language. This is a disservice to the student and the industry as a whole.

Takeaway: students struggling to master English proficiency in a flight school classroom should request another instructor and/or seek out and enroll in an independent Aviation and English proficiency course. Fire a CFI who insists on teaching in anything other than English.

The applicant was issued a Notice of Disapproval and referred to the FAA for an English proficiency evaluation.
