😵If you suffer from anxiety, a hormonal imbalance may be involved.
S*x hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain interact, contributing to imbalances. This is why I always advise addressing the root cause before resorting to medication.
▪Dysregulated cortisol—high or low, or both within the same day
▪Insulin resistance—high insulin and high blood sugar
▪Thyroid dysfunction—usually high, but low thyroid function can also mimic anxiety symptoms
▪Low estrogen
▪Low progesterone
🥵Women in perimenopause and menopause with hot flashes and night sweats are more likely to develop anxiety, more fears, decreased memory and concentration, poor sleep, and somatic complaints (like muscle pain) when they are experiencing symptoms of low estrogen and low progesterone.
🛌🏼Poor sleep can then exacerbate other hormonal problems, such as dysregulated cortisol and insulin resistance.
Evaluation of anxiety and depression during the menopausal transition is tricky because of the overlap between symptoms of anxiety and depression and symptoms of menopause.
☕️Certainly, lifestyle-based approaches like removing caffeine, eliminating foods that may trigger a stress response (gluten, dairy), exercise, and cognitive behavioral therapy are warranted, and if not helpful, a trial of bioidentical estrogen and/or progesterone may help.
I want you to know that you’re not doomed to be anxious, burned out, overly sensitive, in survival mode, or depressed for the rest of your life.

Perimenopause - what is it? Think of it as the coming attractions for menopause. This “pause” is the transition into menopause and usually lasts several years. It brings a lot of new feelings as shown above and a lot of good new knowledge.

We don’t notice some things are broken until it’s too late. The same is true when it comes to our health.
In fact, one of the most important areas people tend to overlook until it’s too late is maintaining stable blood sugar and insulin levels.
Current research even points to unstable blood sugar levels as a root cause for metabolic dysfunction, belly fat, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and even hormone and menstrual issues.
Here are 7 ways to help prevent blood sugar spikes…
1️⃣Eat your biggest meals at breakfast and lunch and your smallest meal at dinner. Eating big, carb-heavy meals at dinner puts a strain on our bodies when we are naturally more insulin resistant, causing the liver to store the sugar as fat. 🥴 For best results, save those larger meals for breakfast and lunch.
2️⃣Include protein with each meal and consume protein and fat before carbohydrates. Protein blunts a blood sugar rise when consumed before and during a meal. Even though protein contains no glucose, it triggers an insulin response that keeps your blood sugar from rising and reduces the total amount of insulin you need to properly handle a meal.
3️⃣Take a 20-30-minute walk after meals. Walking is an easy, low-intensity way to facilitate improved digestion and blood sugar management. 🚶🏽‍♀️
4️⃣Take a shot of apple cider vinegar 20 minutes prior to a meal. Consuming apple cider vinegar has been linked to weight loss, cholesterol reduction, antibacterial properties, and blood sugar control.
5️⃣ Add minerals like magnesium and chromium into your daily supplement lineup. Chromium and magnesium (essential trace minerals that are responsible for key functions in the body) are highly effective in combating blood sugar spikes. 📈
6️⃣ Reduce your sugar intake. the World Health Organization recommends less than 5% of calories from added sugar for optimal health.
7️⃣ Incorporate super-herbs, such as berberine, cinnamon, banaba leaf, and more into your daily routine.
Say goodbye to those unpredictable and dangerous blood sugar spikes, hot flashes, brain fog, and fatigue, and say hello to a more energized, healthier, happier, youthful you.

Getting good sleep is essential for your health and longevity.
If after trying these and multiple other strategies, you still struggle with sleep, please see a functional medicine practitioner who can determine whether things like food sensitivities, thyroid problems, menopause, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, heavy metal toxicity, stress, or depression is interfering with your sleep.

Which one of these do you need to work on?

04/10/2023

As we get older, we need to be more intentional about feeling good!
Unfortunately, many of us are chasing how we look and are either subconsciously (or very aware) that how we LOOK (our waist line, our hair, what our skin looks like) is changing.
This is not us preaching at you - we still struggle with these concepts from time to time too!
Also - caring for how you look is not a bad thing but we think when you do that to the exclusion of true, deep, inner health and you never come to embrace the fact that you’re aging, you’re changing and you should go deeper than surface concerns, you’ll probably age poorly.
We also think that if you’re willing to pay 💰💰💰for a laser treatment (or insert your indulgence of choice) but wouldn’t even consider paying for a coaching program (such as Mastering Midlife Mayhem) that brings you through the paces of understanding HRT, lipids, nutrition, movement, mindset, connects you with an excellent physician, a community of like-minded women, and ongoing, high-level access to us as you continue to work on your health and much more), then you might be someone who is chasing a look, but deep down, will not age well.
We both feel good, even great on most days. Do we always like how we look? NOPE! (There are days we pick ourselves apart 😬) but day after day, we do the things on this list and we keep the focus on what truly matters! ❤️

Adrenal fatigue is rarely the cause. Adrenal fatigue is almost always secondary to some other problem in the body.
➡Here's how it works
The adrenal glands are the anti-inflammatory glands of the body.
If there is something in the body producing inflammation then the adrenals have to work really hard to try and stop the inflammation.
If the inflammation never resolves then the adrenals are constantly overworked and eventually fatigue.
➡Here's a list of things that would cause inflammation that would be very stressful to the adrenals:
-Stealth infections
-Parasites
-Yeast
-Bacteria
-Fungus
-Mold
-Viruses
-Heavy metal toxicity
-Environmental toxins
-Food sensitivities
➡IMPORTANT
Things to help the glands:
1. Rest
2. Prayer/meditation
3. Add positivity to your life such as, inspiring quotes and soothing or happy tones of paint on your walls.
4. Stop reading the newspaper and watching the news.
5. Remove the negative people from your life and make sure you set realistic boundaries.
6. Take take adaptogenic herbs such as , ashwaganda, eleuthero and Rhodiola.
7. Eat adrenal feeding foods such as, wild caught salmon, h**p seeds and cabbage.
8. Most Importantly, find the CAUSE of the adrenal fatigue.

Have you tried any of these before? 🌿

04/08/2023

Toxic adrenal glands can interfere with thyroid function, brain neurochemistry and gut health.
In addition, they can need to a weekend immune system and poor response to stress.
This can lead to all the classic adrenal symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, exhaustion,., information, weight gain around the abdomen and food cravings to name a few.
It would be logical to work on adrenal type in this scenario, however, sometimes it's a leaky gut that's causing the adrenals to be overloaded with toxin.
Other times it's a problem with liver dysfunction or kidney function.
Identifying this is the first step towards resolving it

➡️ICE BATHS AND HOT SAUNA
Hop in the ICE BATH and then jump in the HOT SAUNA and then back to the ice bath and you'll get super healthy!
WRONG! Actually, this could be amazing for someone with healthy adrenals but it can actually be a nightmare for people with adrenal fatigue.
The adrenal glands are the stress glands of the body--they give us the energy and persistence to combat stress over the short and long haul.
If our adrenals are fatigued, they can't handle any additional stress, and let me tell you, an ICE BATH and a long HOT SAUNA sit are massively stressful to the adrenals.
Yes, they have tons of benefits if your adrenals are healthy. However, the additional stress placed on the adrenals by ICE BATHS and long HOT SAUNA sits can be enough to crush the person and make them very sick, or worse, possibly send them into a temporary psychosis if their adrenals are very weak.
➡️INTERMITTENT FASTING
Our adrenal glands help play a role in maintaining normal blood sugar levels in between meals.
If you go too long without eating, then the adrenal glands have to work harder, producing extra cortisol to maintain adequate blood sugar levels. This is why intermittent fasting is not recommended in cases of moderate to severe adrenal fatigue.
➡️LONG RUNS AND HIIT
Long runs and high intensity interval training can exhaust the adrenal glands worsening a case of adrenal fatigue.
➡️POOR SLEEP HYGIENE
When a person forces their body up past 11 p.m. it can significantly stress the adrenals, worsening adrenal fatigue.

These are some of the common questions I look into when I’m trying to peel back the layers of a hormonal imbalance.

Something important to remember about our hormones is that they are chemical messengers that are responding to our physiological state and environment. So when something goes astray, it’s important to look deeper into WHY.

For some individuals, it could be lifestyle choices and for others it could be other ongoing health issues (gut, liver, adrenals, thyroid, etc.).

And in case you’re curious, the determinants of health refers to all the lifestyle questions: sleep, water, movement, nutrition, stress, etc!

This is by no means an all encompassing list, just some common places where imbalances can manifest from.

Are you getting your daily dose of happy hormones?

Brain chemicals are the true secret behind our happiness. Each of us possess four primary neurotransmitters that signal our happy emotions throughout the day.

Unfortunately, when these neurotransmitter levels are low, our happy and motivating signals are absent, which can leave us feeling anxious, stressed and unhappy.

So, what are the signs of deficiency in each primary neurotransmitter?⬇

①Dopamine
Dopamine produces a pleasurable experience by releasing energy, and stores information that will provide the same sensation for the future. Signs of dopamine deficiency include:

◾Fatigue
◾Procrastination
◾Lack of motivation
◾Low self-esteem
◾Anxiousness
◾Hopelessness
◾Mood swings

②Oxytocin
Oxytocin is known as the “love hormone” since it can play a role in bonding, feelings of trust, and motivation to build relationships. Signs of low oxytocin levels are:

◾Feeling lonely
◾Stressed
◾Lack of motivation
◾Disconnect of relationships
◾Fatigue
◾Anxiousness
◾Insomnia

③Serotonin
Serotonin works to stabilize mood. This hormone allows brain cells and other cells of the nervous system to communicate with one another, affecting the entire body. Signs of deficiency include:

◾Low self-esteem
◾Overly sensitive
◾Anxiousness
◾Mood swings
◾Hopelessness
◾Social phobia
◾Obsession / compulsion
◾Insomnia

④Endorphins
Endorphins are often referred to as the “feel-good” hormones since they attach to op**te receptors in the brain, decreasing pain perception and inducing feelings of euphoria. Signs of low endorphins include:

◾Anxiety
◾Depression
◾Mood swings
◾Aches and pains
◾Insomnia
◾Impulsive behavior
