Proverbs 19:17
The one who is gracious to the poor lends to the Lord, and the Lord will repay him for his good deed.

Do you think about giving as though you are lending to the Lord? Obviously, if you give money to a church or to a missionary you might think this. Do you think it when you are gracious to a struggling family member, or to a homeless person holding a sign along the road? What about paying for someone else’s lunch at a restaurant…someone who cannot pay you back? In Matthew 6:3-4 Jesus speaks about giving in this way: “But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

The Good Samaritan parable is more than just doing a good deed, or doing what is right. It's about emptying yourself, not holding on to your advantage or disadvantage but becoming the form of a servant and being found in the likeness of our Lord.
