In an effort for full transparency, we want to share the following:

You will start seeing more posts about urgent dogs.

We, as many other shelters across the country, or perhaps, as I should say, as most other shelters across the country, find ourselves filled beyond capacity.

The situation brings more problems than just physical space. The more dogs we house and try to maintain, the more stressed the population of dogs become. 

We are seeing dogs arrive and quickly become very stressed and start to exhibit behavioral problems because of the large number of dogs that we are trying to house and keep safe. This is not something that is sustainable. It’s impossible.

We cannot stand by and watch as dogs deteriorate in kennels and deteriorate to the point that they become unsafe for staff and volunteers to handle. We cannot allow our hearts to override our minds and let people get hurt…or worse.

When a dog goes from front brain, which is rational, normal, thought processes, to hind brained, which is more like as most people would understand hind brain (pack mentality, essentially) where, absolutely nothing can turn off the switch that causes horrifying behavior, people get hurt. Or worse.

The painful part is that we are very much aware that the majority of these problems can be handled if we were able to place them into a foster home or foster based rescue that was prepared to allow them to decompress safely and provide some time for rehabilitation. We’ve seen it time and time again.

However, we’ve also seen time and time again that trying to correct behaviors within the shelter, such as leash, biting, grabbing and jumping in reactivity are not successful.

We never will be with the numbers that we see coming in through the door; discarded, unwanted, and thrown away dogs.  the latest trend is French bulldogs, “Fluffy Bulldogs”
which is a mix of American bulldogs and French bulldogs, (talk about a genetic disaster) German shepherds, and Belgian Malnois.

As hard as we try, we know that it’s not possible to rehabilitate dogs in the shelter. The longer they stay, the worst things get, and it literally spread like wildfire. 🔥

Unfortunately, decisions have to be made. As painful as it is. Ss devastated as it makes us. As much as it tears our hearts apart. We know the potential.  No one works at the shelter because it’s a glamorous job or because of money; they work at the shelter because they care about the dogs.

It’s absolutely heartbreaking when we reach the point that we know that a dog no longer is safe to keep in the shelter.

If only we could find a rescue. If only we could find a foster home. If we could only find the right adopter. Their lives are hanging in the balance. It’s on us. But it’s radio silence.

Dogs are pouring through the door and overflowing the shelter to the point that we are at where we have dogs in crates everywhere.

The dogs in the kennels who are demonstrating these poor behaviors are really just begging for help and that is the absolute most heartbreaking part of the whole equation.

We want to help them, but yet no one will step up. Everyone wants us to save lives, but no one is willing to take a part in helping us save lives, and it’s absolutely devastating. We can’t point fingers at partner rescues because we know they are dealing with the same things that we are.

We have joined in training sessions to try to figure out ways to work around this and to make the best choices that we can for the dogs that are in our care. We are doing absolutely everything in our power to save lives, but we are up against a tsunami. 

It’s across the country. It’s everyone we reach out to. It’s affected every partner.

So please, before you start to criticize and spread hatred,  what can you do to help?

If you throw your hands up in the air and say that you wish there was something you could but there’s nothing and start to cry, that’s where we are. We have been there for months.!🥺

We are all working as hard as we can, and as fast as we can to get, these animals moved out, but no one is stepping up.

We are an open admission, animal shelter; we cannot turn down any animal who comes in from a contracted municipality.

That means no matter how many animals we have, no matter the lack of space, we can’t say no.

Where do we go from here? We wish wish knew. Costs are up, intake is up, donations are down. Adoptions and rescue are down.

We are all suffering.

Good Morning! We are in need of foster homes for three young, small dogs. They weigh about 15 pounds each. One girl and two boys. They are not available for adoption because they are part of an ongoing animal cruelty case and must be held until the case is finalized. At that point we will know if they can be adopted. They cannot be kept together because the owner has not given permission for them to be spayed or neutered yet. Because of that the boys squabble with each other and they both bother the girl. Three homes or a place where they can be kept separately. They are very nice dogs. Hello Dear Friends and Supporters of Almost Home! As you may know, we are closing our doors. This is the last week in our building. The decision to close has been a devastating one for all of us. Animal Shelters are constantly struggling and have been even more so during this pandemic. The pandemic has put a strain on the much needed fundraising and donations we need to survive. We understand everyone has been affected by this in our personal lives as well. We could never have survived these 15 years without your love and support. You have saved thousands of dogs and cats over the years. We could not have done this without you. Unfortunately, the pandemic has taken its toll. Our building is rented and the owner is selling it. We will continue as a foster based rescue. Please stay tuned to our page to follow our next chapter. Almost Home will continue to help animals just in a different way. Same result with your continued help.
This truly is not what our staff and volunteers wanted to happen. We all love what we do with the dogs and cats, as well as, the people (owners, previous owners and adopters) attached to them. They have all touched our lives. You have all become an important part of our lives. Allowing us to do the best we can for every dog and cat in our care. There is so much to say and do this week. Please scroll through our page. We still have Grant and Mark (brothers tabby cats, 2 years old) who are loving and social with other cats. It would take a big adjustment and patience for them to live with an active dog, but older and calm would be okay. They are very bonded and must o together. Patches and Pumpkin are 4 years old and have been together their whole lives too. Their owner sadly passed away. They are so sweet and social with other cats too. We have two singles. Roseanne, a 3-year-old calico, who is not fond of being surround by many cats but would be a terrific single cat or maybe just one other. She is not fond of dogs though. We also have Oreo. He is a funny-faced black and white 1-2-year-old boy who is social and active. Please stop in this week. They need to find a home by Friday.
Tank is our big ole American Bulldog who would love to have a home to call his own. Tank has lived with female dogs in the past. He is 10-years-old so a quieter home with well-behaved or another laid-back girl dog or two would work. Although, I am sure he would love being a single pet and sucking up all the attention too. Brooklyn is a 6-year-old pitty mix who is the perfect dog. She is housebroken and know all her commands. She is good with other dogs but not cats.

Tank is a 90lb American Bulldog mix who has a nice pep to his step!! He is totally housebroken, walks well on a leash, takes treat ever so gently and LOVES a nice lay down with his peeps!! Tank could do well with a calm female dog but not small dogs or cats for this buddy boy. Please like and share for our gentle giant Tank!!!!❤️

She is such a great gal..... perfect energy level, great on a leash, so happy to meet people, LOVES and we mean LOVES to snuggle!! Brooklyn is around 6 years old, 70lb bully mix girl. She knows so many commands sit, stay, down, paw and heel!! We think she could do well with a laid back new brother but not small dogs or cats for this chickie.

Foxy is a Pomeranian mix who we promise will have a beautiful Pom coat one day! This cutie is a very very friendly 2 yr oldish girl who loves her walks, treats and snuggles!!! We believe she is dog friendly too but a meet is always required.

Here’s another one of our bonded pairs, Mark and Grant. These two brothers are kind of opposites. Grant is more on the shy side and enjoys doing his own thing while Mark is one who wants all the attention. I personally think that’s a perfect combo 🤷‍♀️ as you can see from the pictures when it’s time to clean their cage grant goes off and plays with all the toys and Mark just stays close to you and gives you lots of love. Please consider opening your home to these two boys! You won’t be disappointed!

UPDATE: DEBBIE AND ERSKIN HAVE BEEN ADOPTED.
Meet Debbie and Erskin. These two are just one of our bonded pairs that are in need of a home together. Debbie and Erskin were a bit on the shy side so we started to let them have free roam of the cat room, which has done WONDERS for them. They can still be a little reserved and skeptic at first but then they’re all about getting the love. Please consider adopting these two babies!

Have you heard about Brooklyn? She’s pretty fantastic. She is one of six dogs that we rescued from a not so great situation, but her past doesn’t define her future. Brooklyn is 6 years young and loves everyone she meets. Brooklyn lived with multiple other dogs but a dog meet is always required. No kitties for this beautiful angel though. Brooklyn is the perfect mixture of energy and lazy. She can get really playful, but then will crash out with you and snuggle. She knows sit, stay, heel, lay down, and paw . Please adopt Brooklyn. 🐾🐶

Little Zoey is a fun happy gal who just wanted to play and get treats, not get all dolled up and take pics!!! 😂😂😂 You can just see her thinking “come on let’s do some fun stuff!!” She has the most gorgeous eyes and beautiful coloring. Recently, Almost Home took in 6 dogs from an anima cruelty situation, locally. They are all very sweet dogs (photos below). A few needed medical attention above and beyond the normal vaccines, de-worming, heart worm test and microchipping. Ricco also needs surgery on both of his eyes for a condition called entropian. Basically, the skin on the outside of his eyes, top and bottom, rolls in and irritates his eyes. He even has the beginning of scar tissue on each eye. He needs surgery to correct this and see normally again. Here is a little info on the others too. Lady (pit mix), was being kept in a crate on the second floor and was very emaciated. (I'll spare you the photos. They are heartbreaking.) She is thriving now, in fact we have to cut back on her food a little now. Tank is an American Bulldog who had some wounds on his skin and very badly infected ears. Peaches, Brooklyn and Ruby had minor issues that we were able to handle here at the shelter. Ruby and Peaches have already gone to their new homes. Please donate so we can continue to pay for and provide the care for Lady, Tank and especially Ricco! They are all fabulous dogs who deserve a fabulous new life.

Brooklyn has not had an easy life, it is so evident from her scars but her wonderful personality shines through. She is a total angel, happy to meet new people, housebroken, knows basic commands, a dream to walk and is so affectionate!!

Honey is a very special orphan at the shelter. She’s a tiny little gal so full of love but it just takes her a couple of times meeting new people for her to share it. She loves nothing more then sitting in your lap for snuggles! We think a quieter household would be best for this darling girl.
