Major Hurricane Ida: UWF Closed

University officials are closely monitoring Hurricane Ida, which is currently a category 4 hurricane located in southeast Louisiana.

All UWF locations, including the Pensacola campus, UWF Emerald Coast and UWF Historic Trust, will close Sunday, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. and will remain closed through Tuesday, Aug. 31 at 4:59 a.m. This includes all classes, events, campus activities and online courses.

Normal University operations, classes, events and campus activities will resume Tuesday, Aug. 31 at 5 a.m., unless conditions change, in which case, University officials will notify all students, faculty and staff.

According to the most recent update from the National Weather Service, local impacts include up to 15 inches of rain with potential flash flooding, potential tornadoes and wind gusts up to 50mph.

Residential Students: If necessary, a decision may be made to evacuate UWF residential students to the on-campus ride-out facility. This decision will be made as the storm progresses and communicated in a timely manner to residential students. Dining Services will work with Housing and Residence Life on facilitating dining options during the closure. These options will be communicated to residential students through Housing and Residence Life staff.

The University communicates with students, faculty and staff via email, uwf.edu, facebook.com/westfl, twitter.com/uwf and the UWF Mobile Alert text messaging system. To learn more about Mobile Alert, visit uwf.edu/mobilealert.

To ensure you receive future University communications, confirm that your contact information is up-to-date in the University’s communication system, “Mobile Alert.” Log in to my.uwf.edu and search “Mobile Alert” to update and add contact information.

University officials encourage students, faculty and staff to learn more about storm preparedness at uwf.edu/uwfstorm. Weather information is available by tuning into WUWF at 88.1FM or online at wuwf.org. Updates from the National Weather Service are available at www.weather.gov/mob and twitter.com/NWSMobile.

The Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act of 2019, S. 789, has officially been signed into law as of October 6, 2020. Equine assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) is now a permanent & accepted form of service in preventing su***de in veterans! When I hear more on how to apply for funding, I will pass it along.

UWF SVA members Brent and Dave out today helping to getting American Legion Post 33 back up and running! Did you know this place used to be a dance hall back in the 1920's?!

Photos from UWF Student Veterans of America's post 10/13/2020

UWF SVA's featured member this week is our esteemed President, Brent Gill! Get to know him a bit more!

Hometown: Hammond, Louisiana

Branch Of Service: Army

Years: 2010-2014

Duty Stations: Fort Polk, FOB Altimur, COP Kherwar

Live now: Pensacola

Going to school for: BS in Nursing

Goals After Graduation: Become a licensed flight nurse

Married, Pets, Kids: Engaged to my fiance Holly, two cats and a fluffy siberian husky

Why are you part of the SVA?:

I wanted to be able to help fellow veterans both in scholastic environments and to be a leading part of addressing mental health stigmas and su***de awareness/prevention among veterans.

What do you love about being an Argo?:

I love the general friendliness and openness people have here at UWF. As well as the environment that it has fostered that has helped me to realize my strengths and figure out the goals I want to pursue and achieve.

If you were a contestant on chopped what four ingredients would be in your basket?

New York strip steak, eggs, bacon and mango habanero wing sauce to slather over it all.

Photos from UWF Student Veterans of America's post 10/06/2020

Get to know your SVA! Our featured member this week is our Secretary, Dave Meron.
