ASCENSION SACRED HEART HOSPITAL COVID REPORT FOR SEPT. 1
PENSACOLA, Fla. (Sept. 1, 2021) -- From Sacred Heart Hospital release..."The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 at Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola remains at record-high levels.
The number of hospitalized patients fluctuates frequently, so any individual data points are only a moment-in-time snapshot. But here are some key statistics for today, Sept. 1.
There are a total of 149 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 at Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola. The number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 a week ago was 156.
In addition, there are three children with COVID-19 being treated at Studer Family Children's Hospital.
The current number of 149 is nine times higher than what it was on July 4, shortly before the current surge of COVID began in Northwest Florida. On July 4, the hospital had 17 patients hospitalized with COVID-19.
Today’s number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 is much higher than the hospital's previous peak of COVID-19 patients that occurred in January 2021.
Of all COVID-19 patients coming to us for care, including visits to the Emergency Department, more than half are under age 50.
The hospital has given 322 monoclonal antibody injections since Aug. 10. Ascension Sacred Heart is administering doses of Regeneron's monoclonal antibody treatment called REGEN-COV. It is a combination of two antibodies (casirivimab and imdevimab) used for early treatment of mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19. Call 850-416-LUNG to get more information.
Overall, the infection rate in the Pensacola area is very high. COVID-19 testing conducted in Pensacola by Ascension Medical Group Sacred Heart over the past week found that 32 percent of those who were swab tested were found to have COVID-19. That is 2.5 times higher than what Ascension Medical Group recorded on average last year.
Ascension Medical Group's drive-thru testing center off Bayou Boulevard is testing about 450 people per day.
In Escambia County, only 50 percent of individuals 18 and older have been fully vaccinated compared to the national average of 64 percent, according to the New York Times. In Santa Rosa County, only 47 percent of those 18 and older are fully vaccinated.
"Our healthcare workers need the community's support to stop this surge," said Dawn Rudolph, president of Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola. "The best tools we have available to stop COVID-19 are wearing masks in indoor spaces, social distancing, and, most important, getting the vaccine."
Today, the state announced a new monoclonal antibody treatment site at the Bayview Community Center. The site will be open 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 2001 E. Lloyd St. in Pensacola.
Monoclonal antibody treatments for COVID-19 can prevent severe illness, hospitalization and death among high-risk individuals.
Individuals 12 years and older who are high-risk, that have contracted or been exposed to COVID-19, are eligible for this treatment. Treatment is free and vaccination status does not matter.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of getting vaccinated, and I encourage everyone to get the COVID-19 vaccine if you are able. To learn more about COVID-19 vaccine options, visit FDOH's website: floridahealthcovid19.gov/vaccines/vaccine-locator/
Remember that there are still everyday preventative actions you can take against COVID-19, including wearing a mask, washing your hands often and staying home if you're sick.
These numbers are DAILY, current totals (not cumulative) of the number of individuals in our local hospitals with COVID-19 for each date shown. We receive these numbers directly from the hospitals each day (from Ascension Sacred Heart, Baptist Hospital and West Florida Hospital).

Justin Labrato, chief operating officer for Ascension Medical Group Sacred Heart, said there has been a significant demand for COVID-19 testing at Ascension Sacred Heart's emergency departments, Urgent Care Centers pediatric and primary care offices over the past couple of weeks.
“We decided to re-open the Ascension Medical Group Sacred Heart COVID-19 drive-thru testing center in Pensacola to help our residents get reliable COVID-19 testing that they need quickly and conveniently,” he said.
No appointments are needed. Sacred Heart will offer the commonly used PCR testing to those who do not have COVID-19 symptoms and the rapid COVID-19 tests to those exhibiting symptoms of the virus. The rapid test results are available in about 15 minutes.
