Dr. Keri Fogle and Heather Landry, a UWF student and Escambia County paraprofessional from Westgate Center, joined 290 advocates in Washington, DC on July 11, meeting with members of Congress on issues important to special education. The two took part in the Special Education Legislative Summit hosted by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and Council for Administrators of Special Education (CASE). Together, they joined other advocates from Florida to speak with members of both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives on the importance of continued funding for discretionary programs in special education, such as the Para to Teacher Support Program. Currently, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives are discussing drastically different funding bills for the U.S. Department of Education fiscal year 2024. The Senate bill mostly maintains current funding levels throughout the U.S. education system, while the House bill proposes an overall decrease of 28% ($22.1 billion). The decrease would reportedly reduce classrooms across the nation by 220,000 teachers at a time when the profession is already experiencing teacher shortages in 48 states.
Congratulations!
