Did you know that UWF Anthropology hosts the longest-running forensic anthropology field school in the US? This summer, 20 students participated in the five-week field school. Of the twenty participants, fifteen students from other universities traveled across the nation to participate. In addition to completing the field work, students interacted with professionals such as field investigators and medical examiners. Dr. Allysha Winburn, UWF associate professor of Anthropology led the field school and shared a little about the process. Sam Manning, undergraduate student from Ohio State, and Emmily Romdenne, UWF graduate student, both shared their experiences. Each summer, the field school trains students in standard forensic methods for the discovery, documentation and recovery of human skeletal remains. Students learn to apply basic methods of archaeological mapping and excavation to simulated forensic scenes involving both surface-scattered and buried skeletal remains. They learn to distinguish human from non-human remains and gain experience with explicitly forensic procedures of evidence recovery, such as evidence documentation and collection, site security, and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for different simulated scenarios. To learn more about the program, visit uwf.edu/anthropology. *Please note that students are working with artificial, non-human remains for the purpose of educational learning. #ForensicAnthropology #Anthropology #FieldSchool #Forensics #UWFCASSH UWF Department of Anthropology and Archaeology Institute UWF Undergraduate Anthropology Association UWF Graduate School

Throughout their lives, Valmae and Ron Besser were ardent advocates for the University of West Florida, supporters of the arts and committed to community improvements in Pensacola. Following Valās passing in summer 2019, the University learned it would become the recipient of approximately $2 million in support of their scholarship endowments. Of their gift, Howard J. Ready, vice president for the Division of University Advancement said, āVal and Ron Besser provided a transformational gift for students in the departments of theatre, history and English. Their commitment to higher education and the advancement of UWF students will live on as their legacy.ā This past Friday, Feb. 17, Glenn Breed, chair of the Department of Theatre, honored Valmae and Ron Besser at an unveiling and dedication of the Besser Theatre in the UWF Center for Fine and Performing Arts. He highlighted the Besser's deep commitment to serving students across the university, as well as within the Department of Theatre. The UWF Department of English and UWF Department of History and Philosophy are also beneficiaries of endowed scholarships from the gift. The UWF College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities is deeply grateful for the legacy the Bessers have left at UWF. To learn more about gift, read more at news.uwf.edu or https://bit.ly/3EjjxFO.
