Peoria Snapshot

As summer approaches and temperatures begin to rise, the city of Peoria is once again partnering with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) to launch the Heat Relief Regional Network. Peoria's cooling centers and hydration stations are open now through September 30. Peoria is collecting donations of bottled water at each of these locations to help support these vital programs.

According to the Arizona Department of Health, last year, Phoenix experienced its hottest summer on record, with 55 days reaching temperatures equal to or greater than 110 degrees Fahrenheit. This included a record-breaking stretch of 31 consecutive days with highs above 110 degrees Fahrenheit. These extreme temperatures are a significant threat to residents' health and well-being.

Living in Arizona for an extended time does not make one immune to the dangers of extreme heat. Statistics from 2012-2022 show the highest number of heat-related fatalities occurred among long-time residents. 933 deaths were recorded among long-time Arizonans during this period, averaging 85 deaths per year.

The Heat Relief Network is a crucial regional partnership raising awareness about the dangers of extreme heat and coordinate resources for vulnerable populations. The goal is to prevent heat-related deaths among those most at risk during the summer months.

Peoria encourages all residents and visitors to stay safe during these hot summer months by staying hydrated and seeking shelter in one of Peoria's cooling centers if needed.
