Grace is expecting this week! This is her last litter. Her mom is Power Paws Mandi from the M litter. The M litter was Power Paws Dawn x Power Paws Frasier. These lines are so very special to me and so many others!

Borrowed from a friend:
New information from UC Davis regarding recommended spay neuter ages by breed and gender based on the increased risks of joint diseases and certain cancers. The list now documents (40) popular dog breeds. The information is extremely interesting because it shows us that our current "blanket" recommendations based on "size" of the dog is not accurate in certain cases. So many have been told "after the first heat" or "8-10 months" are completely NOT in the best interest of the dog. The photo below outlines the breed and gender specific data from a 10 year study. Note FEMALE GOLDENS are now suggested to remain INTACT per the study, males no earlier than 12 months. If you would like to read more about the ongoing study follow the link. https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/veterinary-science/articles/10.3389/fvets.2020.00388/full?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR3AYg8AUxF3yub1SfFq27LwxgZs16T7arA1Pa9t5JZWvZOn3wNoQSwJ4Ic_aem_-fS57WHtcM-jETAlnxvDuA

Sophia is in labor! Expect puppies in a couple of hours… maybe sooner.

We have worked hard to keep our prices down. Over the past 6 years our prices haven’t increased even though food, vet care, toys and treats have all gone up! A few years ago I walked buy a pet store in a mall. They had a Golden puppy, I was curious as to how much they were selling him for: $4500! That’s crazy! And people will pay it because the pet store will accept credit cards. This is a complete impulse purchase. I wonder what they are charging now!

This is so important to understand! I highly recommend teaching your dog the trade game very young BEFORE there is a problem. To teach “trade,” give your dog a toy or other object that he likes to play with. When he's happily holding it in his mouth, offer him a high-value treat and as he drops the toy to take the treat, click the clicker (or use a verbal marker, such as the word “Yes!”) and feed him the treat. You can do this at any age don’t wait until there is a problem.

DON’T TOUCH MY STUFF!
Resource guarding – also called possessive aggression

We all guard our resources, it’s a natural reaction to a threat of something we value being taken away.

It’s essential for survival and dogs or other animals would not survive in the wild if they didn’t guard their resources.

We also don’t get to decide what’s valuable and what’s not – different things have different value to different dogs and at different times.

Food is usually the most common, but toys, furniture, different items, places, or even a certain person are all things that may be seen as a valuable resource.

A dog turning their head away, freezing, a hard stare, whale eye, moving away, growling or snapping may quickly escalate into a serious bite in an attempt to protect that valuable possession.

Punishing or forcing a dog to give something up is probably one of the worst things to do.

Resource guarding is rooted in the emotion of fear – the fear of that resource being taken away.

Punishment and force further increase that fear, which only increases and reinforces the need to protect that resource.

When a dog is guarding food or an object, we can change the negative emotion of that fear into a positive one by swopping or trading something that has a similar or higher value than what the dog has.

This is one of the most effective ways to address resource guarding of objects as it works at the root cause of the behaviour by changing the emotional response.

A dog resource guarding a person is more complicated to address. A full history of the individual dog, family dynamics, attachment styles, situation and environment all have to be assessed before planning and working on a solution.

Resource guarding can usually be prevented, managed and addressed and by starting early, understanding why dogs feel the need to resort to this behaviour and doing what we can to prevent it from happening in the first place.

So excited to announce Grace is confirmed pregnant with Bo babies! We will be raising her puppies in Arkansas and bringing them back to Arizona for placement. We will also consider transport to Southern California for families out there who want a puppy from this litter. This is her final litter, she will retire with her guardian family in California once the puppies are 8 weeks old.

Rio likes watching tv especially if there are animals on it!

07/25/2024

Our toy haul! The dogs are happy!!! We will see how long these last! We keep all toys inside unless playing with them supervised outside. Supervising dogs with toys is so important, when they start ripping them up, in the trash they go.
Can anyone guess their favorite thing here? What about the first to be chewed up?
I also have a favorite and a least favorite…. Thoughts?

07/23/2024

If pregnant, Grace x Bo will produce very nice light honey colored Goldens with the prefect Golden temperment. Fingers crossed that she is pregnant with her final litter and all goes smoothly. I couldn’t be more proud of Grace and the puppies she has produced for us. We will confirm pregnancy by ultrasound next week.

07/22/2024

Can’t wait for these puppies! It will be 6 months since our last litter. Several of these puppies are spoken for but if she has a large litter we will have puppies available!

Typically, we don’t go down in price as our puppies get older. With older puppies that have not yet found their forever homes, we have put in a lot of the work for you. They are crate trained, which means we listened to them whine and cry all night in a crate. We got up for days or sometimes weeks to let them out to go potty in the middle of the night. Cleaned up many accidents. We have incurred more expenses by giving them premium food, treats, and toys, plus a couple hundred dollars in vet bills for their vaccinations and any other treatments they needed. We have worked on house manners, including not jumping on people, not chewing furniture, and waiting patiently for their food. They have had hours of socialization with many other people (other families meeting them), kids, and friendly dogs. We have more invested in them, which makes them easier for you to train and transition into your home.

Some breeders may lower the price as puppies age because they know how much work is involved and are eager to sell them quickly. We, however, prioritize the well-being of our puppies above all else and do not follow this practice.

There are many reasons that we might have an older puppy available. Sometimes people are waiting for a specific color or s*x. It seems when we have a lot of girls, everyone wants boys, and if we have a lot of boys, they always want girls. Sometimes we have puppies reserved, and a family decides now is not the right time for a puppy. Other times we have more puppies than expected, and it just takes longer to find homes. Very rarely, we have a puppy returned, but it does happen when families don’t realize how hard raising an 8-week-old puppy can be.

When you get an older puppy from us, we’ve put in a lot of effort to ensure the transition is smooth for both you and the puppy.

Where are they now segment featuring Cannoli!

DOB: 8/8/21
From: Faith & Mayor
Blue Collar in his litter

A favorite memory of him as a puppy is when he was learning how to go up and down stairs. I think he purposely came down the stairs in a goofy way. It made me laugh. He wasn’t taught much on the stairs because in our world, I wouldn’t be using the stairs, being in a wheelchair, but it was more for his confidence. But I think he was doing a number on me by being such a goofball.

Cannoli is a mobility service dog. He’s learned many commands to help me. He can pick up items that I drop, such as the TV remote. He can carry light items when we’re shopping. He will even put his front paws on the checkout counter to drop the item off. (Picture attached).

His favorite thing to do when he isn’t working is to sit or stand on top of the picnic table outside our apartment. He sits and observes his domain! (Some pics attached)

I got Cannoli when he was 8 weeks from Westwing and his service dog training began immediately. A myth about service dogs is they don’t get to be just a dog. This is not true. He gets much time off to play and relax.

A service dog is not a pet, but they are part of the family. He’s my family, and that’s special. His journey can be found on his Instagram page
