New EPA Rule on Air Pollution

News on recent federal Environmental Protection Agency regulation might be interesting for people who want to try to maintain better indoor air quality in their homes.

Specifically, in February the EPA changed a particular part of its regulations on air quality standards regarding PM2.5.: the EPA is setting a new level for ‘primary health based’ annual PM2.5 at 9.0 µg per cubic meter. That standard was previously set at 12 µg per cubic meter.

The EPA did not change primary and secondary welfare PM 2.5 standards.

Along with this change, the EPA is also improving efforts to educate people about the risks of PM2.5.

What is PM2.5?

PM2.5 is a type of particular contaminant in the air that results from things like wood burning and coal burning.

This can come from natural processes like wildfires, from industrial facilities or from other sources like a simple campfire or bonfire.

PM2.5 exposure is known to carry certain health risks, and can lead to people developing long-term conditions in response to overexposure. It’s particularly bad for people with allergies, asthma, compromised immune systems or various respiratory conditions, like COPD.

What does it mean for business?

What the new EPA rule means for business is that they may face additional challenges or limits in permitting processes.

Industrial operations require certain kinds of oversight, and companies that violate EPA standards may be fined.

A resource from August Mack Environmental shows that some of the most common types of violations have to do with recordkeeping – where businesses don’t keep adequate records of permit and operations activity. Others have to do with installing new equipment without a permit, or failing to maintain systems in a way that limits emissions. At the end of the day, all of these have to do with emissions, but some violations are more document-based, while others actually raise emissions levels.

New Study Looks At Humidity and Indoor Air

Humidity can have a role in building maintenance, impacting our indoor air quality.

When it comes to understanding the science behind clean, breathable air, humidity definitely plays a part. The humidity of your air has an impact on its quality and what you breathe.

So it’s well worth understanding the role of humidity and how to keep your indoor air at the right level of humidity.

Impacts of Humidity on Indoor Air:

Too much humidity can foster the growth of mold, spores and mildew.

You may have seen this at work in an abandoned building, or an unfinished space like a basement.

Overtime, heat or other factors produce humidity, which is often seasonal. In those damp conditions, the mold and mildew grow

People might not be aware. This is happening until someone starts to exhibit signs of illness or respiratory impairment.

Mildew and mold are particularly bad for people with allergies, asthma, and other respiratory challenges.

In some cases, indoor air quality can have a dramatic impact on health. People may need to move out of a situation where they’re being impacted by unhealthy contaminants.

Another problem is that humidity can cause different kinds of contaminants to sort of get trapped in the air and remain airborne, more likely to be in sometimes you can intuitively feel the negative effect of excessive humidity. It just feels more difficult to breathe and the body may respond with things like hives or stuffiness, or some other reaction.

On the other hand, new science is showing that drier air can be bad, too.

The Paris Olympics – and the Issue of Air Quality

The Paris games were a big event that everyone seemed to be watching -- but aside from all the focus on the powerful athletes and their track records, the statistics on performance, and the spectacle of the games, there’s also what’s happening in the background, and what’s been going on over recent months, to prepare for this international showdown.

Part of that effort has to do with the history of the city of Paris, and its air quality.

We tend to think of France as a leader in ecology and health – a cleaner, greener place where higher standards are recognized.

However, a look at standard Paris air quality trackers shows that Paris as a city is only slightly ahead of cities like Chicago, or even others in the developing world, with an air quality index of 61 overall and a significant portion of that driven by No2 traffic emissions.

However, although the city might not be the cleanest – in fact, it’s one of the most heavily impacted in the country – there is a will and a desire to make things better, and people are working behind the scenes to improve air quality, including through the Olympic event. With more traffic activity, it’s a flashpoint to watch in terms of the impact on carbon emissions and air quality. That’s part of the reason that Paris leaders are so keen on tackling this problem now.

We’re getting more information from new studies about how air pollution can affect newborns.
Recent articles cite a joint project between the Penn State College of Medicine and the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Contaminants (MIREC) a Canada-based institution. The team looked at maternal exposure to a range of pollutants that can translate into health effects for infants.

Wildfires Increasing in Texas and Elsewhere

New data shows wildfires are increasing around the country, and that could be bad for everyone’s outdoor and indoor air quality.

Reports from the Associated Press last month show states like Texas and Virginia getting hammered by colossal wildfires, with a total of nearly 3,000 square miles (over 2,600) burned so far this year in the United States.

In other words, we’re on track for major increases from last year.

That’s concerning in and of itself, but there’s also the factor of preparedness: the U.S. Department of Interior has claimed that in general, the federal government is “ready” but those with a close view of the situation call for renewed vigilance. In looking at wildfires in America, reporters cite events like the California Dixie Fire in 2021 that burned over 1,500 square miles of land, and required 2,000 firefighters.
