On September 28, 1975, Archbishop Sheen was the principal speaker at a Day of Reparation to Two Hearts conducted by the Diocese of Scranton, PA. In order to make this day available for anyone without causing financial hardship, the ticket was only $3. While there was no formal dinner, the Marywood College cafeteria offered its facilities for a lunch break.
Noting that he had been on the campuses of 42 universities in the course of his travels, Sheen said: "The young are waiting for someone who will talk of discipline and sacrifice." True for every age!

On August 29, 1925, the young Father Fulton Sheen was assigned as assistant to Msgr. Patrick O'C. Culleton at St. Patrick church in the Southside Peoria. Sheen recalls:
On my return from Europe, in response to the "Come home" letter of my Bishop, I was appointed to a parish where the streets were unpaved, in that part of the city which was called the "lower end" and from which the well-to-do had left for other parts of the city. The pastor, Father Patrick Culleton, was a true man of God. I began preaching a Lenten course; and this poor church which was looked down on by the other parishes on the hill soon became crowded. Some of the pastors later forbade their congregations to go down to the "lower end" where "that young priest is preaching. Stay in your own parish." ...I never complained, and I can say in my own heart of hearts that to me this was the will of God. I had to forget my desire to follow a more intellectual vocation, and was resigned to being a curate. This gave me a great peace of mind. (Autobiography Treasure in Clay)

He said of this book, "The Declaration of Independence, I repeat, is a Declaration of Dependence. We are independent of dictators because we are dependent on God. God is the necessary factor of our salvation. As a result, he is to be the center of our lives. His ways ought to permeate every aspect and area of our lives: education, employment, pleasure, mourning, socializing, etc. All is done in sight of the omnipotent Lord, and all we do should be done reflecting this knowledge. Our every interaction should be filled with the love of our Savior."
