Some effects include:
- Presbyopia refers to the loss of ability to see close objects or small print. This is a normal process that happens usually around ages 35-45. Presbyopia is typically treated with reading glasses, bifocals, or contact lenses.
- Cataracts are classified as a clouding of the lens inside the eye, often causing blurred vision. Normally, the lens is clear, much like the lens of a camera. Cataracts usually progress very slowly, taking years to mature. If cataracts become large enough, surgery is performed to replace the “dirty” lens and clear up the vision.
- Glaucoma/Macular degeneration - many eye diseases are associated with the aging process. Glaucoma is a condition in which there is damage to the optic nerve, the direct connection between the eyes and the brain. Often, a diagnosis of glaucoma is associated with increased eye pressure. Patients are usually screened for glaucoma at every routine exam. Patients with macular degeneration often notice distortion or loss of vision due to a loss of cells in the macula, which is the area of the eye that is responsible for central vision. Anyone with changes to their central vision should contact their eye doctor for further testing.
