Many of the top colleges in the nation are also the most expensive. So how do they make sure that they are accessible to any student that qualifies?
The colleges on this list are committed to meeting the full financial need of each student admitted. Furthermore, they do not consider a student’s need when evaluating them for admission.
Top students from all backgrounds can rest assured that if they apply to these schools and gain acceptance, they will only need responsible for paying their Expected Family Contribution. For low-income families, this could be $0.
While this does not level the playing field in terms of academic opportunities and support prior to college that negatively impact low-income and other underrepresented student populations, it is a step in the right direction.
For more information on need blind schools that meet 100% of need or building a college list with affordable options, email me at worldclasscollegecounseling.com.
Traditions are part of what make a college experience so memorable.
Many schools have the statue you rub for good luck, the fountain you jump in even if you aren’t allowed, or the seal you cannot step on until you graduate.
Others have more unique traditions like throwing toast onto the field after the third quarter of each football game at the University of Pennsylvania or dropping frozen pumpkins from a roof at midnight on the Saturday before a Halloween at MIT.
Share your school’s fun traditions in the comments bellow.
“Measured not by whom we exclude, but rather by whom we include and how they succeed.”

$79,539...That’s the total cost of attendance at Harvey Mudd College (HMC), the US college with the highest tuition. It is also more than many people (and families) make in an entire year!
Good thing that like many other expensive colleges, HMC gives a lot of financial assistance. Their average need-based scholarship or grant award (money you don’t have to pay back!) is $48,474, reducing the average net price to a much more palatable $31,065.
To reduce the out-of-pocket cost even more, students and their families can then choose to take our loans or apply for outside scholarships.
When building your college list, don’t exclude a school immediately because of its listed cost of attendance. All colleges participating in federal financial aid programs are mandated to provide a net price calculator on their websites. Use this tool to determine how much you would likely have to pay at each college you are considering. You can find net price calculators for any school of interest at https://collegecost.ed.gov/net-price.

Yesterday, we explored test blind admissions practices, so it is fitting that this week’s College of the Week is test blind Reed College.
Reed College is a small liberal arts college on the outskirts of Portland, OR with a reputation of attracting some of the most intellectually curious students. The 9:1 student faculty ratio allows for conference style classes where professors moderate intense discussions amongst students.
If you would like to learn more about Reed or receive guidance in building a best-fit college list, email [email protected].
Most people have heard of test optional admissions, but few have heard of test blind admissions.

In last week’s , many people responded that they took Astronomy to fulfill their science requirement in college.
But what if you wanted to study Astronomy as your major? Check out these schools that have excellent Astronomy programs!
Did you know that most colleges consider you for merit aid based on your college application? Often, no additional application is required.
For academic-based merit aid, colleges often have a sliding scale of GPAs and Test Scores to determine the amount of merit aid awarded.
Colleges also have institutional needs that they need filled. Maybe the oboe player in their orchestra is graduating. They might incentivize applicants who play the oboe with some merit aid so they are not left oboe-less the following year.
Doing well in school and excelling in an extracurricular activity could mean extra money in college!
It’s Throwback Thursday! For those of you who went to college, what class did you take to fulfill your science requirement?
Every week, we will be highlighting a College of the Week on Weekly College Wednesdays.
This week’s College of the Week is Elon University, in North Carolina.
Elon is a medium-sized school in a suburban setting that has a number of reputable programs, outstanding student services, happy students, and a relatively low cost of attendance for a private school. It’s shocking that the acceptance rate to this gem of a school is so high.
Consider Elon when building your college list.
On Terminology Tuesdays, we will be translating all of the lingo we use in the college admissions world.
This week’s term is “supplemental essay.” For more information on why supplemental essays are crucial, visit https://www.worldclasscollegecounseling.com/post/why-supplemental-essays-are-crucial
Happy everyone! On Mondays, World Class College Counseling will be kicking off the week with a list of schools that are know for having strong programs in a particular field of study.
This week we will be exploring which colleges in the Northeast have strong Biology programs. If you want to study life and living organisms in I-95 corridor, this list can be a great jumping off point.
To get more advice on how to apply to these programs or to explore biology programs elsewhere in the US (or the world), email me at [email protected].
TGIF! And thank goodness for Financial Aid!
Every Friday, we will be bringing you financial aid information, terminology, and advice on financial aid for .
Today we explore the term Cost if Attendance (COA). While tuition is often the largest piece of the pie, many other expenses are included in this often very high number. When reposting their total cost, colleges also account for room and board, a number or fees, books, transportation to and from campus for breaks, and day-to-day living expenses.
Check back each Friday for more information me advice on how to reduce this sometimes shocking sticker price for a college education.
Today, I am proud to launch, World Class College Counseling.
For the last decade, I have worked with hundreds of students in public, private, religious, boarding, and international high schools, guiding them through each step of the college admissions process.
World Class College Counseling will incorporate best practices in college counseling with a highly personalized approach. Learn more at https://worldclasscollegecounseling.com.
