On Tuesday, June 27, 2023, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) went into effect, just about seven months after President Biden signed it into law as part of the government funding bill. The PWFA provides that government employers and private employers with at least 15 employees are required to make “reasonable accommodations” for workers who need them due to pregnancy, recent childbirth, or related medical conditions. Those of us who have had the privilege to work with or be represented by Deb Willig know that she has been a fierce advocate for equality in the workplace and in the legal profession – and now the entire U.S. legal profession does too.

The ABA Commission on Women has named Deb among five women lawyers and judges to receive the 2023 Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award. Deb is the sixth recipient from Philadelphia in the 32-year history of the award; one of the highest honors in the legal profession, it recognizes women who have achieved success in their own careers and then used their positions to advance all women in the profession. Past honorees include Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Professor Anita Hill, Deb’s friend and mentor, the late Judge Norma Shapiro, and Philadelphia’s own Roberta ‘Bobbi’ Liebenberg.

On Dec. 16, 2022, the National Labor Relations Board issued a decision announcing its return to the New York New York standard for balancing the property rights of owners against the rights of off-duty employees of contractors to engage in labor protests or other protected activities on site. Restoring this balancing test gives contractor employees greater parity with other employees to fully exercise their workplace rights. Congratulations to women soccer players all over the U.S.

The United States Postal Service recently announced the 2023 stamp designs including one that pays homage to women's soccer in the U.S. from youth leagues to the reigning elite world champion U.S. national team.

Willig, Williams & Davidson is honored to have played a role in moving equality forward in women’s soccer. Our firm, in partnership with the Players Association, negotiated the first-ever collective bargaining agreement for the National Women’s Soccer League Players Association. The agreement includes increased salaries, free agency components beginning in 2023, and player health and safety provisions. The collective bargaining process began in early 2021 and continued into 2022.
