Serving cheesesteaks for over 30 years!
Well here we are, in the Final Four! It’s a real long shot, Curlys is a very tough competitor but we’re in it to the end! If you want to vote touch on the Philadelphia Beautiful title, it takes you to their page and vote #9 on the post. Thanks so much for getting us to this point, we are humbled, grateful and very encouraged by all your loyalty and support❤️!
Wow, just wow! We are blown away! First we want thank Philadelphia Beautiful for running this competition and thanks to Chubby’s for being such a formidable opponent! But Barry’s came out on top to advance to the Final Four🎉! This demonstrates everything we say about this neighborhood and all of our customers who come from far and wide. We have the best by far, it’s so humbling and encouraging to still be relevant and valid considering our current situation. Given that we’re still in the process of moving and we are deeply situated in the neighborhood we don’t benefit from high visibility that those spots on the more heavily traveled routes have. We depend on word of mouth and this is really indicative of the love in this city. Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to vote, hanging in there with us, we appreciate you and look forward to when we can thank you in person! We will update our progress and keep you in the loop as to any projected opening date. There is movement, slow but moving forward! Have a great weekend, thanks again❤️! And if you go by and happen to see us in there working, stop and say hi, we miss seeing people so much!
Please help us make it through to the Final 4! Just click on Philadelphia Beautiful, takes you to their group page and vote #9! Thank you all for helping us get this far, we really are humbled by all the support❤️, especially in our current situation.

Happy 35 years to us! 🎉🎊! Even though we’re not able to really enjoy this milestone, this closure is just temporary, we are still very much engaged in our business. Just switched gears from making cheesesteaks to the logistics of this move. Stay tuned for more info, hopefully sooner than later!
Crazy, we’re not even reopened yet and topping the huge tourist traps! When you’re going through a hard time and everything is going nowhere near as planned, something like this comes along and it’s a giant morale booster! We know our people, you are the greatest. It’s been at lot longer than we ever imagined but you’re still hanging in there with us, we know we have been so blessed by all the loyalty and support. Thank you to everyone who voted, we have the BEST customers❤️!
We haven’t even reopened yet but still in a competition! Thank you to everyone for your loyalty and support! Can’t wait to be open so we can thank you all in person! And thanks Philadelphia Beautiful for including us, this city❤️!

Sad day at our house, the old Barry’s is gone😢💔. It wasn’t just a building. But the memories remain, so many wonderful, amazing people. One of the most important things we learned in that building is that the news media is 100% wrong about people. We don’t hate each other at all. There are so many wonderful people in this city, in this country and we are all on the same page, just trying to get by. Friendly, funny, kind people, all ages, races, creeds, from all over. We met so many sitting at our counter and hearing their stories, it was such a great experience. But we will get open at our new location and we’ll make new memories. Thank you to everyone for hanging in there with us, your support is what keeps us moving forward. Slowly, but we’ll get there!
Still waiting. 6 months. But thank you so much to all of you who are hanging in there, we can’t imagine it’s going to be too much longer.
Good things come to those who wait, that first cheesesteak is going to be sooooo good! And our fries! Well done and crispy of course!

Today is National Mom & Pop Business Day. Here we are back when Barrys was in its infancy at the corner of Ridge and Leverington, almost 35 years ago. It’s a little surreal looking at this picture, (Roxy Drugs!), these years have flown by. I loved that little store so much, it was cozy and had a real old neighborhood vibe, but we outgrew it and moved to our (now closed) location on Leverington Ave. We worked so damn hard, open to close everyday. Ben was born about six weeks after we opened. That store was so small and cramped, we had to be a little creative, newborn baby Ben slept on blankets and Barrys coat in an Amoroso roll box. Covid restrictions were so frightening, we had no idea what was going to happen. But when the s #%t hit the fan, this neighborhood, our amazing customers stepped up and we are so grateful to have made it through. Now we hit another bump in the road with this relocation but I have absolutely no doubt that we will open soon and be right back at it without skipping a beat. We have the best, most loyal customers, we look forward to seeing you all at the new location (6216 Ridge Ave) and getting back to doing what we love. We appreciate every single one of you, thank you so much for your support and encouragement. Have a Happy Easter💖
Happy National Cheesesteak Day from all of us at Barry’s. We really wish we were serving these beautiful sandwiches today. Thanks for hanging in there with us, your support and encouragement means more than you know. ❤️
Well it is Valentines Day and we are still not open. Waiting patiently for all permits to go through. I had not expected all these delays when we closed in November. I still can't give a opening date as of yet. Hopefully sooner than later, we miss all our great customers. As soon as we have any more definite news it will be posted.
Thank You All for your patience and looking are forward to getting open!

Just left for the last time, end of an era for us, we are so sad, heartbroken. I know we posted about the new store but I can’t let us leave Leverington Ave without a small mention of what it meant for us to be there. It is with extremely heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our location, and it is a real goodbye, the building will be razed. We have been there for 30 years. It’s crazy how a brick and mortar building can stir so much emotion. Not necessarily the physical place but the people and feelings associated with it. We always say Barry’s should have been a reality show, I wish I had kept a daily journal so we could remember everyone who came in and worked there, everything that happened in that building, it’s been quite a ride! Looking at it empty is very moving, there’s stories everywhere, memories in the dents and scratches, memories of so many people who worked there, sat at our counter, who are no longer with us, you can’t recreate that in a new space. Leaving a place, especially when it’s not in your control is very sad and emotional. The memories made there will hold a very special place in our hearts. It’s truly been wonderful, we have loved our time in this location. But as our yesterdays were memorable, now moving forward brings new memories that we’ll create in our new space. See you soon at 6216 Ridge, we’ll be excited to welcome you to the new store. Working hard to get it finished, look for the grand reopening soon! We love what we do and where we do it!
And as always thank you for being the best customers anywhere, we are so grateful to serve you, we appreciate you, you’re outstanding, just the best.
The rumors are true, we are moving! Our last day on Leverington will be Saturday 10/28. We are so excited to open up this new location and keep serving all of our amazing customers. Barry’s History
Barry’s Steaks was founded by Roxborough native, Barry McGuinn, and his wife Wendy in July of 1989. After growing up on Jamestown Street, he began making cheesesteaks at D’Alessandro’s in 1967. He worked for Bill D'Alessandro for 22 years before deciding to go out on his own.
Barry and Wendy bought a pizza shop on the corner of Leverington and Ridge Avenue. After two months pizza was off the menu and he started focusing on what he knows best - cheesesteaks. In 1994, they moved down the street to 471 Leverington Avenue, where they are still located today. Since then, we've added items such as mini cheesesteaks, specialty cheesesteaks, and Barry's branded soda.
"A lot has changed since the beginning, but Barry's is still a family-owned and operated business for over 30 years now! Thank you to all of our amazing customers and employees, we couldn't do it without you." - Barry & Wendy McGuinn
