Participants from three special programs -- Chile Leading the Way, Ulster University Summer Exchange and the Fulbright Pre-Academic Program dove into the principles of the First Amendment at their workshop with Dr. Rose Corrigan, exploring the pivotal role of free speech on campus and beyond. This enlightening session provided a deeper understanding of U.S. cultural values and the foundational rights that empower voices from all walks of life.

This year, Drexel English Language Center proudly brought together the Fulbright Pre-Academic Program Fellows and the Mandela Washington Fellows for an unforgettable networking session. With participants hailing from over 47 countries combined, this gathering sparked dynamic exchanges of ideas and cultural insights, strengthening bonds across continents. Both groups are committed to driving change, enhancing global understanding, and enriching their communities.

Our talented Fulbright scholars explored our nation’s capital, diving deep into American heritage through its iconic museums and monuments. At the ELC, we're more than just a classroom — we're a gateway to understanding the world!

We were honored to host Philadelphia City Councilwoman Jamie Gauthier who shared valuable insights on how City Council works and the initiatives she supports. Students in our Intensive English Program and visitors from Ulster University greatly benefited from her insight.

We are thrilled to welcome the 2024 cohort of the Fulbright Pre-Academic program!

During their six-week program at the ELC, these international scholars will immerse themselves in coursework and socio-cultural activities to hone their research and communication skills, increase their understanding of U.S. culture and society, and master the technology needed for learning on a U.S. campus.

We appreciate learning with and from them during this U.S. State Department-supported program for global exchange!

ELCAPS stands for English Language Center Application Support. This program at the ELC provides counseling and support to students who are applying to universities in the United States.

We volunteered at the Allegheny Avenue Arts Festival in its ninth year. The Fulbright Pre-Academic program has helped them every year since the festival started. Volunteers hand out food, sign in guests, and help set up and break down the festival.

What a great day to explore the nation's capital!

Drexel English Language Center hosted a networking session for two groups of international leaders visiting Drexel - the Mandela Washington Fellows and the Fulbright Pre-Academic Program Fellows.

🔵 The Fulbright Scholars come from 30 different countries and were awarded prestigious Fulbright fellowships to attend US graduate school life and develop a deeper understanding of American culture while exposing US citizens to their cultures and backgrounds.

🔴 The Mandela Fellows: Representing 17 African countries, these young leaders are part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, which empowers them through leadership training, academic coursework, and networking opportunities.

Both groups share a common focus on fostering cultural awareness and exchanging ideas. Their missions align in promoting global solutions to today's challenges and furthering democracy and civic engagement. The event served as a platform for participants to foster valuable connections and broaden their worldviews.

Drexel’s ELC was thrilled to organize this opportunity for cultural exchange and collaboration between these groups of young leaders who will undoubtedly create a profound impact on their communities and beyond.

Throughout their stay, our Fulbright scholars will experience the vibrant tapestry of U.S. school life and culture, gaining invaluable insights into American society. They will also have the opportunity to cultivate their Fulbright identity and expand their network, fostering lifelong connections.

From specialized courses in research and writing, American culture, and educational technology, to engaging in volunteer community activities and field trips, this program promises a transformative experience for our participants.
