Last week, Dr. Allen Ho, MD, FACS, FASRS, Co-Director of the Wills Eye Retina Service and Director of Retina Research gave the 46th Annual E. B. Spaeth Oration at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

The oration, entitled Science, Serendipity and Listening to the Patient, centered around the idea that patients are doing better, particularly when considering the global prevalence of significant ophthalmic disease such as age related macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataract. An innovation ecosystem based on scientific discovery and translational research drives progress but luck and timing are perhaps as important. Our patients tell us that our work is not done, listening to their stories can help us improve and enrich our journey with them.

The mission of the Spaeth Oration is to preserve Edmund B. Spaeth's values, and to inspire others to live honestly, take risks, not be petty, and contribute positively--especially students, residents, and fellows. Learn more about Edmund B. Spaeth and the oration here: https://bit.ly/43ZSA5x

Explore healthcare career possibilities at our upcoming FREE event, Roadmap to Medical School in the United States, on April 20!

During this event, Dr. Joseph Savino of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania will deliver a presentation on the path to medical school. The presentation is aimed at Philadelphia-area students and their parents and teachers explaining the process of preparing for and applying to medical school.

The Association of American Medical Colleges has forecast a shortage of circa 120,000 physicians in the United States by 2030, exacerbating a crisis where up to 83 million US residents have insufficient access to a primary care physician.

Common sentiment is attending medical school is “difficult” at best and “unattainable” at worst for many students. Dr. Savino’s presentation will explain why this is not the case, and what students and their families can do to attain medical school and make medicine a rewarding career.

High school and college-aged young people and their families are encouraged to attend!

Disability Pride Month is celebrated in July to commemorate the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), enacted in 1990. As the disability rights movement continues to fight for representation, we'd like to shine a light on some of the advocates whose work supports those living with disability in an able-bodied world.

Note: This post has been edited to use the most updated version of the Disability Pride Flag. Thanks to those who let us know of our error and help us to continue to ensure all communities feel supported.

Our video series, "My Time Inside an Iron Lung," features interviews with polio survivors, all of whom live with some degree of lasting disability. Interviewee Adolf Ratzka founded The Independent Living Institute (ILI), a policy development center specializing in consumer-driven policies for disabled peoples' freedom of choice, self-determination, self-respect and dignity, in 1993.

Judith Heumann, a renowned disability advocate who passed away in March of this year, was a friend of Adolf and longtime board member of the ILI. Born in Philadelphia, Judy was an internationally recognized leader in the disability community & lifelong civil rights advocate for disadvantaged people. Fondly known as the "Mother of the Disability Rights Movement," her book "Being Heumann" describes her story of fighting for the right to receive an education, have a job, and just be human.

We encourage you to learn more about the Independent Living Institute, and the work of Judith Heumann, on their respective websites!
